🌿 Our Students’ Council of All Beings Experience 🌿

At Ridge and Valley Charter School, our Stardust students (Grade 1) are doing something truly extraordinary: bringing the natural world to life through the Council of All Beings, a year-long curriculum inspired by the work of Joanna Macy.

In this program, some of our youngest learners connect deeply with the world around them. Each child is chosen by, or chooses, a being from nature: a mountain, a river, an animal, or even an ecosystem. Over the year, students immerse themselves in observing, sketching, and researching their chosen being, discovering its stories, its struggles, and its place in the web of life.

Through this process, children create masks and costumes, and finally embody their being, speaking on its behalf in a ceremonial Council of All Beings. This ritual teaches empathy, environmental stewardship, and the understanding that every life, seen or unseen, human or non-human, has a voice and value.

🌱Ridge and Valley Charter School Earns Prestigious Global Green School Recognition!🌱

Ridge and Valley Charter School was recognized as a National Green School Ranking Awardee in 2025 by Green Mentors, a partner of the UNESCO-led Greening Education Partnership. This award celebrates schools that lead in embedding sustainability across governance, curriculum, campus operations, and community engagement, preparing students to be climate-ready, environmentally responsible, and globally conscious.

The distinction was officially conferred at the 9th NYC Green School Conference in 2025, held alongside the 80th United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week NYC at Cornell University. This honor affirms that sustainability is a core part of the educational experience at Ridge and Valley Charter School. ✨

We will proudly display the GEP Green School Badge as a mark of our alignment with internationally recognized green school quality standards.

We’re excited to share the launch of our GoFundMe to support part of the next chapter of Ridge and Valley Charter School.

For more than 22 years, our K–8 public charter school has inspired students through hands-on learning, earth literacy, and a deep connection to the natural world. As our community has grown, we’ve outgrown our current space and are working toward a new, sustainable facility that reflects the values we teach every day.

As our community has grown, the buildings that support students when they are not out on the land are aging and can no longer meet our needs. This new home will allow our students and educators to continue learning from the land while strengthening a globally recognized model of environmental education.
