Praying for our brothers in Abilene today.

With the heaviest of hearts, we announce the death of Abilene Firefighter - Hunter Patterson. FF Patterson and his friend Brett Underwood, were involved in an off-duty, fatal vehicle accident early this morning, Friday, May 15, 2026. Both men passed away.

This is a devastating loss for Hunter’s family and our department. Hunter was a respected and beloved member of the AFD for 11 years. Hunter leaves behind his wife and children, as well as numerous other family members and friends. The loss of both men has greatly impacted members of our department. We ask that our wonderful community keep both families in their thoughts and prayers, while also respecting their privacy at this difficult time.

Today was a remarkable day for Howard County.

Today marked the final test of our Safe Haven Baby Box.

This is something Tate’s Place has prayed over endlessly since the moment our board voted yes to bringing it to our community. Every step of this journey has been led with prayer, love, and the hope of creating a safe place for someone facing an unimaginable moment.

This baby box symbolizes the most selfless, sacrificial love a parent can give. But it is so much more than just a box. It is hope. It is compassion. It is protection. It is grace. It is a reminder that no one has to walk through impossible moments alone.

Today, our community gained more than a box it gained a promise. A promise that every life is valuable, every story matters, and there will always be a safe place filled with love and support.

Thank you to everyone who came out today to witness the final test and stand beside us during such a meaningful moment for our community.

A huge thank you to RW Fence for partnering with us on the installation. You guys are incredible, and we appreciate you more than you know for helping bring this vision to life.

And thank you to Chief Jay Holt for being such a strong voice throughout this entire project. Your leadership, compassion, and support have meant so much. Howard County is truly blessed to have you.

We are beyond grateful that Tate’s Place was able to bring something so meaningful to Howard County, and we pray this box will always represent love, safety, hope, and second chances for every life it may touch. 🫶🏻

Great video from Irving Fire Fighters that show the importance of staffing. Yes Irving is much larger city but we have the some of the hazards, apartments, and high rises that they have. Public safety is number 1!

What a day of success we had yesterday at fill the boot Muscular Dystrophy Association!!
Our rough count last night is sitting at $16,355!!! We still have not counted in all the coins. We live in a great community full of support! I want to thank all the 2922 guy’s for showing up, All the guys on B shift, Big Spring Fire Department, City of Big Spring - Public Information, Big Spring High School cheerleaders, Nick H Ornelas, Shiloh Salazar, Kyle Rable for Congress all for showing up and filling the boot!
