READ ABOUT IT!! Howard County to Use $350,000 State Grant to Purchase New Ambulance for Big Spring Fire Department

BIG SPRING — Howard County will use a $350,000 state grant to purchase a new ambulance for the Big Spring Fire Department as the department resumes responsibility for emergency medical services in Big Spring and Howard County.

The funding was awarded to Howard County through the Texas Comptroller’s Rural Ambulance Service Grant Program, which provides money to rural counties for the purchase of ambulances and required emergency medical equipment.

The grant comes at an important time for local emergency services. The Big Spring Fire Department resumed EMS operations on October 1 after ambulance service had been provided by Allegiance Mobile Health for approximately three years.
Big Spring Fire Chief Jay Holt has said the department spent nearly three years working toward restoring its EMS operation after staffing and pay issues contributed to the city getting out of the ambulance business.

With staffing rebuilt, Big Spring firefighters are once again providing emergency medical response throughout the city and Howard County.
Howard County plans to put its $350,000 grant award toward the purchase of a new ambulance for the fire department, adding another vehicle to support the newly restored EMS operation.

Howard County is one of 152 Texas counties receiving funding through the state program. The Texas Comptroller announced a combined $64.75 million in Rural Ambulance Service Grants for fiscal year 2026.

The grants are intended to help rural communities strengthen emergency medical services by offsetting the significant cost of purchasing and equipping ambulances.
For Big Spring and Howard County, the award provides additional state support as the fire department begins a new chapter of providing local ambulance service.

Read About It!! Federal Energy Report Offers Encouraging Signs for Howard County Oil Economy

BIG SPRING — A new federal energy report is providing potentially encouraging news for Howard County and the Permian Basin as oil development continues across the region.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that crude oil prices and refinery margins generally increased during the third quarter, conditions that could help support continued activity in one of the nation’s most productive oil-producing regions.

The report comes as Howard County continues to see signs of new development. Recently published Texas drilling permit data shows Surge Operating LLC received permits for two new horizontal wells northwest of Big Spring. Both wells are planned for the Spraberry Trend area and have listed total depths of approximately 9,000 feet.

Oil and gas activity remains an important part of the Big Spring and Howard County economy, supporting jobs not only in drilling and production but also in trucking, equipment, construction, and other businesses that serve the industry.

Higher crude prices can improve the economics of drilling new wells and maintaining existing production. However, producers also weigh factors including operating costs, transportation expenses, and the longer-term outlook for oil prices when making investment decisions.

Stronger third-quarter oil prices and continued permitting activity also indicate that energy development remains active in Howard County and across the Permian Basin.

Howard County is the anchor site for a new lithium extraction project!
Select Water Solutions and LibertyStream are pioneering lithium extraction at Select’s facility in Howard County. The process pulls lithium from oilfield brine and refines it into lithium carbonate for batteries, using water infrastructure that is already in place. The first commercial unit is designed for up to 1,000 tons of lithium carbonate production a year, with commissioning targeted for late 2026.
