This Memorial Day, Cal Veterans Group honors the UC Berkeley students and alumni who gave their lives in service to the United States.

Among them was PFC John Moses Ananian, a UC Berkeley anthropology graduate. He intended to teach when he returned from his service. He was a U.S. Army soldier assigned to Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division.

PFC Ananian was killed in action in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam on September 30, 1969, at just 23 years old.

He came to Berkeley to learn.
He left Berkeley to serve.
And he never made it home.

UC Berkeley students served and died in:
• World War I
• World War II
• Korea
• Vietnam

Did you know the Memorial Glade was created to honor WWII veterans who died in the line of duty?

Across this campus, memorials stand as reminders that generations of Cal students answered the call to serve, and some paid the ultimate price.

Today we remember them.

Honor. Remember. Never Forget.

Over the weekend, Operation Epic Fury began, and we mourn the loss of six service members who were killed in action, along with many others who were seriously wounded.

At UC Berkeley, the Cal Veterans Group honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage and dedication reflect the commitment and professionalism of service members serving around the world every day.

We also recognize that news like this resonates deeply within the veteran and military-connected community on our campus. Cal Veterans Group remains committed to supporting our veterans, service members, and military families at UC Berkeley with care, respect, and understanding.

Today, we pause as a community to recognize their selfless service to our nation, to keep their families in our thoughts, and to stand in support of all who serve and have served.

The CVG wants to put an early spotlight to the USMC veterans that take a stark presence at UC Berkeley! We are proud to have our Marines celebrate their beloved Corps’ birthday!

Despite the academic environment at Cal filled with strict rigor and deadlines — the Cal Marine veterans find a way to make do and set time aside to celebrate!

The US Marines Corps Veterans - Erick, Adrian, Jonny, and Robbie —alongside the gracious US Navy “token seaman” veteran —Jeremey— held a mini celebrating the Marine Corps 250th anniversary!

Alongside other friends who showed their support to the cause as well!

There was a mini traditional cake cutting ceremony where the knowledge of the Corps is transferred from the oldest Marine to the youngest — passing down a plethora of rich knowledge full of grit and wisdom to the new generation!

~Semper Fidelis

“Wherever you are, every Marine is your brother.” - R. Lee Ermey (1944-2018) (Rest in Peace)
