The David Brower Center provides a home for the environmental movement by advocating for the beauty, diversity and ecological integrity of Earth. The Brower Center accomplishes this mission through a distinctive combination of permanent infrastructure and ongoing programs in a unique civic institution that:

* Informs the public about the environmental challenges we face and the bold actions we mu

st take if ours is to remain a living planet.

* Inspires people to recognize their own power and responsibility to act on behalf of the Earth.

* Connects individuals and organizations dedicated to social equity and ecological sustainability. The Brower Center fulfills these commitments through three core programs:

* Art and Education, which offers museum-quality exhibitions and public programs that serve to educate audiences about a wide range of environmental issues and foster a more engaged citizenry.

* Resident Organizations, through which the Center houses 30+ nonprofits and social enterprises and provides capacity building and networking opportunities

*Event Rentals, hosting more than 300 events every year for nonprofit and private businesses, and strengthening the green event industry by requiring clients to abide by low-waste, green principles. Together these programs bring over 50,000 people to the Brower Center each year and draw nonprofit organizations, social entrepreneurs, artists, activists, and the general public to engage in creative dialogue and action.

Sacramento-based artist Jennifer Peart reimagines landscapes through a lens of possibility and healing. Infused with modern design elements, her paintings hold the tension between violent histories and the potential for regeneration and reconnection to the earth.

For multimedia artist Liat Berdugo, a childhood experience of planting a tree in the Jerusalem Forest became the starting point for a body of work about how borders are constructed. Through archival research and digital image manipulation, Berdugo examines the Jewish National Fund’s forestation project and interrogates the role of forests in the displacement and erasure of Palestinians.

Artist Simon Tran melds intuitive gestural marks and arresting color in his abstract reflections on memory, generational trauma, and new growth. His latest installation is a playful exploration of resourcefulness inspired by his parents’ migration to the U.S. in the wake of the Vietnam War. South Bay-based artist Piyaali B Samanta creates her own maps tracing her family’s migration history spanning India, her country of birth; Venezuela, where she grew up; and the Bay Area where she currently lives and works. Through her creative practice, she explores transformations in the places she has called home and questions how human-built forms impact communities and natural ecosystems alike.

Experience Samanta’s work in person—check out the Flow State exhibition now on view at the Brower Center until August 20! The opening reception of the Art/Act: Local 2026 exhibition is less than a week away! Join us at the Brower Center in Downtown Berkeley on Thursday, June 11 from 6:30 to 8:30pm as we celebrate this year’s immensely talented cohort of Northern California-based artists: Liat Berdugo, Jennifer Peart, Piyaali B Samanta, and Simon Tran. In Flow State, these artists examine the phenomenon of borders, raising timely questions related to migration, ecology, and displacement. All are welcome at this free event.
