Nebraska Transplant Support Group is here for all recipients, family members, those waiting for transplant, and any one who has an interest in organ, eye and tissue donation. Nebraska Transplant Support Group is a volunteer-led organization comprised of transplant recipients and their families, transplant candidates, donor families, medical personnel, social workers, clergy and others interested in transplantation and promoting donor awareness.

This week on Gift of Life – The Organ Transplant Podcast, I’m honored to share the incredible story of Beth Beathard.

Beth’s heart problems began at age 50 with cardiomyopathy and sarcoidosis. In 2008, her life changed forever when she received the gift of a donor heart.

Her donor was just 23 years old — a young mother of three whose family, in the middle of unimaginable grief, said YES to organ donation.

Today, Beth is 70 years old, active, participating in 5Ks, and living each day with gratitude for the second chance she was given.

Every heartbeat carries a legacy.

August is National Multiethnic Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM), a collaborative effort to save lives and improve the quality of life for diverse communities by fostering a positive culture around organ, eye and tissue donation.
Why is NMDAM needed? 60% of patients on the national transplant waiting list are from multicultural communities. The need for donation and transplant is more pronounced in minority communities where disproportionately higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease contribute to organ failure, especially kidney failure. NMDAM is a collaborative effort of the National Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Multicultural Action Group (NMAG).

There has been news about the Network of Hope over the past year or more that has caused people to question the ethics in organ donation. Sadly, this OPO has been decertified. What does this mean for the people who live in their area? And so many people have taken themselves off the State registries because of the news coming out about this one OPO. Please remember not all are the same. We have a great team here at LiveOnNebraska.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the federal decertification of Network for Hope after investigators found repeated patient safety failures in its handling of organ donations.
