The West End Redevelopment Corporation (WERC) is a private, non-profit organization with a mission to serve as a catalyst for home ownership, neighborhood stabilization and communi

ty revitalization in Belleville, Illinois. Founded in December 2005, and initiated through the efforts of the West Belleville Promotional Committee, WERC serves the neighborhoods of the West End, which are collectively bound by Routes 157, 161, 15 and 59th Street in Belleville, Illinois. Louis. Unfortunately, some of our older properties have given way to neglect and/or abandonment. WERC sees an opportunity to restore these properties while making way for revitalization. Our initial efforts are focused on purchasing deteriorating properties in the West End. Properties owned by WERC will be managed, improved and sold or removed on a case-by-case basis. We are committed to revitalizing and maintaining a healthy, diverse community and believe quality housing is a step in the right direction.

We would like to thank Jacob Surratt for serving six years (!) on our West End Community Development (formerly WERC) board and property committee.

Thanks to his urban planning and development credit expertise, Jacob has been instrumental in our community's efforts to pursue derelict properties under Illinois' Abandoned Housing Rehabilitation Act. Using the 2018 statute, Surratt documented blight in seven (!) West End filings resulting in:
- Two homes renovated and sold: 300 S 74th St and 4 Concord
- Two added to County demolition list - 121 Hazel and 7100 Northern
- Three motivated owners to take action: 7312 Foley, 111 Lamoine and 9805 W Main.

Jacob Surratt is planning to move to Chicago to pursue new career opportunities, and the West End will miss him! This is my favorite "American Gothic" photo that ran in the BND about our most successful rehab at 300 S. 74th.

If you see Jacob, be sure to wish him a happy birthday on August 19th and good luck with his big city move.
