**IMPORTANT COMMUNITY EVENT UPDATE!**

Due to recent funding cuts, The Doula Lab has made the difficult decision to scale back our annual Halloween Extravaganza.

But we couldn't let Halloween pass without bringing some joy to our community! 💜

So we're switching things up!

Due to our reduced funding and new outdoor location, we will no longer be offering free haircuts or face painting this year.

While we're disappointed that we cannot provide everything originally planned, we're grateful to still have the opportunity to celebrate with our families!

On Monday, 22 future doulas walked into their first day of training. 💜


They're from St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Belleville, and for the next 16 weeks they're learning how to walk families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Many of those families are in places where no one in the room looks like them or is fighting for them.

Black birthing people in this country die at about three times the rate of white birthing people. We don't accept that, so we train the workforce that changes it.

Here's where we need you: grants are slow and restricted, and they don't keep a student from having to pause training when life gets expensive. Community support does.

🎯 Our first milestone: $5,000 by October 31
💵 $344 sponsors one week of training for one student
🎓 $5,500 gives one student a full scholarship

💜 A Message From the Founder: Help Me Fund the Lab
Building The Doula Lab has been one of the biggest leaps of faith of my life.
I didn't start this organization simply to create another maternal health program. I started it because I saw what was missing in our community—and I believed we could build something different.
A place where families could receive support throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond.
A place where doulas and perinatal health workers could be trained, employed, supported, and given opportunities to build sustainable careers.
A place where fathers and partners are included.
A place for childbirth education, lactation support, maternal wellness, simulation and workforce training, community resources, and connection.
A Birth Justice Hub.
And we're building it. 🧪💜
But building something new also means fighting to sustain it.
Grants have helped us accomplish incredible things, but grants are often restricted to specific programs and expenses. They don't always cover the everyday costs required to keep the doors open, maintain our space, strengthen our infrastructure, grow our workforce, and respond when families need us.
That's why I'm asking for your help.

As a community-based Birth Justice Hub, we are building a stronger system of support for families throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond—including education, doulas and perinatal health workers, maternal wellness, fatherhood engagement, community resources, and connections to care.

📣 **BIG NEWS: THE DOULA LAB IS GOING NATIONAL! 💜**

We are proud to announce that **The Doula Lab has joined the National Maternal Mental Health Accelerator**, launched by the **Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health** alongside more than 100 national, state, and local organizations working to transform maternal mental health care across the United States.

And yes—**The Doula Lab is at the table.** 🙌🏾

As a community-based **Birth Justice Hub**, we know that maternal health is mental health. Supporting birthing people means addressing the full experience—from pregnancy and birth to postpartum recovery, emotional wellness, family support, and access to culturally responsive care.

Through the National Maternal Mental Health Accelerator, organizations across the country are coming together around major priorities, including:

🧠 Expanding access to maternal mental health providers
🤱🏾 Extending meaningful postpartum care throughout the first year
💜 Making mental health care more affordable and accessible
👩🏾‍⚕️ Training providers and addressing maternal mental health care deserts
📣 Elevating patient and family stories
🏛️ Advancing research, policy, and systems change
👶🏾 Supporting policies that allow families time to heal, bond, and recover

For us, this is bigger than having our name on a list.

**It means the voices and experiences of the families we serve in Southern Illinois and the St. Louis Metro East are represented in a national movement for change.**

We are especially proud to join organizations such as the Shades Of Blue Project March of Dimes, American College of Nurse-Midwives, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative, Mamatoto Village, Birth In Color,** and many other organizations committed to improving maternal and family health.

The work we are building locally is connected to something much bigger.

From our doulas and perinatal health workers to our childbirth education, fatherhood initiatives, wellness programming, and growing Birth Justice Hub—we remain committed to creating systems where families don't simply survive pregnancy and postpartum.

**We want them to be supported, heard, cared for, and able to thrive.**
