Meetings held the first Saturday of each month at 6:00 PM at the location below (Rm 201) with informative presentations, show & tell, and specimen ID. The Lawrence County Rock Club is an educational
organization dedicated to the advancement and
enhancement of rock, mineral, fossil, and gem collecting;
the study of geology and earth science; the development and
study of lapidary arts; and the exchange of ideas,
information and the comradary between individuals and
groups with similar interests and purposes. Meetings are held on the first Saturday of each month, 6 p.m. at the StoneGate Arts & Education Center, 931 15th Street, Bedford, Indiana. Family and Individual Adult membership dues are $10.00. Individual Junior membership dues are $1.50. Junior
members must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Visitors are always welcome.

The Lawrence County Rock Club had a very interesting meeting last Saturday evening. Andria Karshner gave a wonderful presentation on malachite and copper minerals, sharing information about these fascinating minerals and their characteristics.

We were also pleased to welcome visiting former club member Garrett Bell, who joined the club when he was just five years old and remained a member until leaving for college. Garrett gave us an update on his life since leaving the club. He became a mining engineer and now works at a gold mine in Alaska. He brought along several interesting specimens that he has collected through his mining experiences, as well as an impressive collection of shark teeth.

Several children also brought rocks to the meeting for identification, adding to the fun and interest of the evening. We were especially pleased to have one of our largest meeting attendances in recent years.

The Lawrence County Rock Club welcomes visitors and new members of all ages, including children. Come join us and learn more about rocks, minerals, fossils, and the many interesting things they have to offer!

Andria Karshner will give a presentation on malachite at the Lawrence County Rock Club's October 3 meeting. The meeting will be held at the StoneGate Arts & Education Building in downtown Bedford, IN at 6:00 pm. Visitors and guests are welcome!

Phil Karshner presented an interesting program on fluorescent minerals at the September meeting of the Lawrence County Rock Club. He explained how certain minerals respond to ultraviolet (UV) light and how their fluorescence can vary depending on the wavelength of UV light used. Phil brought along a variety of fluorescent mineral specimens and several flashlights that produced different UV wavelengths, giving members an opportunity to see these differences firsthand.

Following the program, members enjoyed a show-and-tell featuring specimens they had brought to share. The evening also included a short business meeting and an update on plans and developments for next year’s gem and mineral show.

The Lawrence County Rock Club met Saturday August 1 at 6:00 pm at the StoneGate Arts & Education Center in downtown Bedford. Scott Winters gave a program on how to identify host rock containing marine bromolites which are fossilized coprolites, regurgitalites, cololites or gastrolites from the digestive system of marine animals. Several examples were exhibited, discussed, and passed around. They will need to be dissected to reveal if they actually do contain bromolites. The possible host rocks were collected from sites where bromolites had been previously collected. The program was followed by show and tell and a review of the club’s gem, mineral, and fossil show held in June at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds,

Posting for those followers that have interest in the Indiana Geological Survey. I have known Todd since he was a graduate student at Indiana University and wish him well. His successor at this time is unknown.,

Todd Thompson has been the go-to person in Indiana for geologic information about all the basic societal needs tied to this science.

The Lawrence County Rock Club would like to thank everyone who attended and supported our 2026 Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show. Despite a rainy weekend, the vendors I spoke with were pleased with both attendance and sales.

The weather forecast didn't deter most of our exhibitors. All 47 indoor vendors and 26 of 31 outdoor vendors came to the show. Bravo to those hardy vendors who braved the elements!

The weekend even provided a memorable story. One outdoor vendor reported that a child attempted to leap over a mud puddle beneath his canopy but accidentally knocked a box of emerald-in-matrix specimens into the mud. After searching through the puddle and recovering as many as they could, the vendor jokingly announced, "Free emerald mining!" A few more specimens were discovered, and the lucky finders were invited to keep them. What could have been an unfortunate mishap turned into a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.
