During The Longest Table last month, we handed out our United Way of Bay County Community Awards to deserving members in our community! 💙🙌

We want to take a minute to recognize our friends and neighbors who have done so much for us, such as:

This year’s recipient of the George R. Heron Heart of the Community Award is the Bay Veterans Foundation for their extraordinary commitment to improving the lives of veterans and strengthening the fabric of our community. Founded through the vision and leadership of Vietnam veterans Mike Jamrog and Keith Markstrom, the Foundation was built on a simple but powerful belief: that veterans deserve more than services, they deserve a place to belong. What began as an idea has grown into the Veterans Workshop & Learning Center, a welcoming, volunteer-driven organization where veterans find friendship, purpose, mentorship, and hope. Through hands-on learning opportunities, peer support, and meaningful community connections, the Foundation empowers veterans to help themselves while inspiring them to become leaders, teachers, and mentors for others.
The impact of the Bay Veterans Foundation extends far beyond its programs. It is reflected in the veterans who no longer face isolation alone, the families who have been reunited with loved ones rediscovering purpose, and the countless lives redirected toward hope and healing. Under its leadership, the Foundation has become a catalyst for community engagement, restoring treasured public spaces, honoring military families, expanding outreach to underserved veteran populations, and creating innovative educational opportunities that benefit the entire region. By building a community where veterans know they are valued, supported, and never alone, the Bay Veterans Foundation exemplifies the spirit of the George R. Heron Heart of the Community Award and leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire and strengthen Bay County for generations to come.

🎃 Halloween is often a time for treats, traditions, and fun. But for families struggling to afford the basics, even small seasonal extras like candy and classroom party supplies can squeeze an already tight budget.

According to the latest available United For ALICE data, 50% of children in the U.S. live in households that are either in poverty or ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) – with income above the poverty level but less than the cost of basics. And many of the workers who help make Halloween happen are ALICE themselves.

The good news? A little kindness can go a long way.

This Halloween, we're sharing simple ways to help make the holiday a little sweeter for everyone. Have another idea? Share it in the comments!

During The Longest Table last month, we handed out our United Way of Bay County Community Awards to deserving members in our community! 💙🙌

We want to take a minute to recognize our friends and neighbors who have done so much for us by creating a new community award for a special individual:

The first Live United Junior Award recipient is Leah Gary! She embodies the spirit of living united through her unwavering commitment to service, leadership, and community impact. A junior at Western High School, Leah is known for her willingness to step forward whenever help is needed, whether volunteering for United Way of Bay County’s Back-to-School program, assisting with food distributions, or supporting day-to-day efforts at the United Way office. Those who work alongside Leah describe her as a natural leader who not only volunteers her own time, but also encourages and inspires others to get involved. Her positive attitude, dependability, and servant-hearted approach make her an invaluable asset to every project and organization she supports.
Beyond her volunteer service, Leah excels academically while maintaining an impressive list of extracurricular commitments, including swimming, track, and participation in the Bay Area Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council. She takes honors courses and consistently demonstrates integrity, confidence, and compassion in all she does. Leah has a unique ability to make others feel welcome and included, regardless of their background or circumstances. With aspirations of pursuing a career in education, she already exhibits the qualities of an outstanding mentor and role model. Her dedication to her peers, her community, and the wellbeing of others truly reflects what it means to Live United, making Leah a highly deserving recipient of the Live United Junior Award.
