Senior rights hold better claim to the land than junior rights in Texas. So land surveys from the 1600s onwards are still held in regard. Because it all traces back to the parties original intent of agreement of giving away said land. So older surveys are typically held with higher regard than newer ones. Older surveys typically have monuments in their field notes such as a boulder, stream, or in this case an old barbed wire fence. In older Texas surveys the unit measurements that is frequently mentioned is the vara, which comes from the Spanish vara. A Texan vara equivalent is equal to 33 1/3 inches. The leica receiver is on an old iron rod that surveyors from long time ago used to mark boundaries.
