Join us Tuesday January 21 at 1:00pm ET for the ASPRS Mentors Podcast where we will be joined by special guest, Dr. Steve Steinberg.

Dr. Steinberg currently serves as the Geospatial Information Officer (GIO) for the County of Los Angeles California where he works across departments to develop and implement geospatial strategy with a team of over 150 highly skilled geospatial professionals. Throughout his career he has focused on the application of geospatial analysis for modeling and visualization of spatial data in both human and natural environments. He also serves as program director for the Los Angeles Region Imagery Acquisition Consortium (LARIAC) Program, a consortium of approximately 50 local, state and federal organizations, academic institutions, and NGOs that collaborate in the acquisition of remote sensing data, derived products and services for the county. Prior to joining the LA County, he served as Principal Scientist and department head at an environmental research agency in southern California (2011-2018). From 1998-2011 he was a Professor of Geospatial Science at Cal Poly Humboldt, California. During his tenure with the University, he was honored as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in airborne remote sensing (Simon Fraser University, Canada; 2004) and a Fulbright Senior Scholar in geospatial analysis, (University of Helsinki, Finland; 2008). Dr. Steinberg continues to educate future professionals as an Adjunct Professor in the MS GIScience program at California State University, Long Beach and the Claremont Graduate University. He is coauthor or editor of several books and articles including Resilient Communities across Geographies (2021), GIS Research Methods: Incorporating Spatial Perspectives (2015).

He is actively involved in geospatial leadership positions (most recently he elected as the next Vice President of ASPRS), as a member of the GISCI Certification Committee, and as an instructor for the Geospatial Professional Network’s GIS Leadership Academy. He also regularly serves on government committees, currently the USGS 3DEP workgroup.

In his free time, he enjoys travel, attending concerts, and playing his “GiStar” (perhaps the world’s only GIS-themed electric guitar).
