๐ŸŽ“ Congratulations to LSU CSE graduate student Richard Jiang on successfully defending his master's thesis! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

We're so proud of Richard for reaching this exciting milestone and for the fascinating research he's conducted along the way!

His thesis, "Human Detection of AI-Generated and Partially AI-Generated Images: Visual Cues, Confidence, and Classification Accuracy," explores a question many of us have probably asked ourselves: Can we really tell when an image is AI-generated?

Richard surveyed 184 participants to see how accurately they could distinguish real photographs from fully and partially AI-generated images. Among those who completed the intended six trials, participants correctly identified all three categories just 33.3% of the time, equivalent to random guessing.

His findings show just how challenging it can be to recognize AI-generated content, even when we think we know what to look for. It's important research as these technologies continue to evolve!

We're especially grateful to Richard's advisor and committee chair, Dr. Mahmood Jasim, for his guidance and mentorship throughout this journey, and to committee members Dr. Ibrahim (Abe) Baggili, and Dr. Reza Ghaiumy Anaraky for their time, expertise, and support.

Richard, congratulations on this well-earned accomplishment! We know how much hard work goes into reaching this point, and we're excited to celebrate your success! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Please join us in congratulating Richard! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ”Ž Solving digital forensics challenges that have gone unanswered for nearly 20 years? That's something worth celebrating! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

We're incredibly proud of our LSU CSE faculty and students behind Scalpel3, an open-source tool helping investigators recover digital evidence from damaged devices and reconstruct deleted or fragmented files!

Led by Dr. Golden George Richard III, Director of the LSU Cyber Center, and Dr. James Ghawaly, LSU CSE Assistant Professor, the team solved two digital forensics grand challenges dating back to 2006 and 2007. They've also received $750,000 in NSA - National Security Agency funding to continue advancing the technology.

And we're just as proud of the students who helped make this happen!

LSU CSE PhD student Karley Waguespack served as lead student author, contributing to executable file recovery alongside Samuel Goodwin, George Hendrick, Tre Landaiche, Mingyang Li, Tyler Saizan, Jacob Tucker, Samuel Hildebrand, and Joshua McCain.

Seeing our students tackle real-world challenges alongside faculty who support their growth is exactly the kind of research opportunity we're excited to share!

The team's related research on Tesserae and MoDiCo was also selected for NeurIPS 2026, one of the world's leading AI and machine learning conferences.

Congratulations to Dr. Richard, Dr. Ghawaly, Karley, and the entire Scalpel3 team! We're excited to see what's next! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’€ Please join us in welcoming the newest member of our faculty, Professor Jasper P. Bonington II.

Professor Bonington has been settling into life at LSU CSE, and luckily, Professor A. Bubu has taken him under his wing. Heโ€™s been showing Jasper the ropes, getting him acquainted with the office, and helping him prepare for what they both agree is the most important time of the academic year: Halloween. ๐ŸŽƒ

Jasper brings years of experience in deadlines, bare-bones coding, and keeping a very impressive skeleton crew running. His teaching philosophy is simple: no student should ever be afraid to ask a question. Although, admittedly, his office hours can be a little dead.

So far, Jasper seems to be settling in nicely. Professor A. Bubu has been making sure he knows his way around, introducing him to life at LSU CSE, and helping him get his office set up.

And Professor A. Bubu is thrilled to finally have a colleague who appreciates his enthusiasm for Halloween. We have some frightfully fun things planned for the two of them this month, so you may want to keep an eye on our page. ๐Ÿ‘€

Jasper will be hanging around the office throughout October, so stop by to meet our newest professor and take a picture with him! Make sure to tag us so we can see it. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

But first, Professor Bonington needs a teaching assignment.
What class do you think Jasper should teach? Wrong answers are highly encouraged. ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ‘‡

๐ŸŽ“ Itโ€™s official: Dr. Taha Gharaibeh! ๐ŸŽ‰

Weโ€™re excited to celebrate Dr. Gharaibeh, who successfully defended his PhD dissertation yesterday and officially earned that new title! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

His dissertation, โ€œVolatile Evidence at Scale: Forensically Sound Preservation and High-Performance Memory Forensics for Containers and ROS-Based Robots,โ€ tackles challenges at the intersection of digital forensics, high-performance computing, containers, and robotics, exploring how valuable evidence that can disappear when systems change or shut down can be preserved and analyzed.

Through his research, Dr. Gharaibeh developed new tools and approaches to make memory forensics faster and more effective at scale, from container environments to ROS-based robots. His work included accelerating memory analysis, reconstructing thousands of robot poses from memory alone, and demonstrating why forensic readiness matters as robotic systems become increasingly complex.

A PhD represents years of research, persistence, problem-solving, and probably more than a few moments of โ€œone more experiment.โ€ Weโ€™re incredibly proud to see all of Dr. Gharaibehโ€™s hard work lead to this moment.

A special thank you to his advisor and committee chair, Dr. Ibrahim (Abe) Baggili, for his mentorship and guidance throughout this journey, and to committee members Dr. Golden George Richard III, Dr. Joseph Khoury, Dr. Andrew Webb, and Deanโ€™s Representative Dr. Frederick D. Weil for their time, expertise, and support.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Taha Gharaibeh on successfully defending his dissertation and earning his PhD! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ“
