Celebrate Betye Saar’s 100th birthday with us.
She is one of the most important artists who confronted racism and historical stereotypes in America through assemblage art and mixed media.
Her artistic journey is rooted in a childhood experience, where she did not have a Black doll that looked like her, at a time when racial stereotypes were strongly present in American culture. This created an early sense of underrepresentation and a search for identity and belonging.
The exhibition at the New-York Historical Society celebrates her rare collection of Black dolls, gathered over decades and later transformed into powerful artworks that reinterpret history and give these objects new meanings of strength, dignity, and memory.
