See the person before the label.

That sounds simple. It asks something of us: listen to a person’s story before deciding what a category tells us about them. In I Am Not a Black Man: Embracing True Identity, I write about the harm of prejudice and the possibility of seeing one another more fully.

Who does God say I am?

That question goes to the heart of I Am Not a Black Man: Embracing True Identity. My faith does not erase my ancestry, my experiences, or the history we must face. It grounds my identity in Christ and calls me to see that same God-given dignity in others.

Who has the authority to tell you who you are?

Who has the authority to tell you who you are?

That question stayed with me through years of bringing people together across racial and cultural lines. It led me to write I Am Not a Black Man: Embracing True Identity.

The title may stop you. I hope it also invites you to hear my story. I write about growing up in the segregated South, the labels people place on one another, and the identity I have found in Christ.

The book releases October 13. If you would like to know when it is available, sign up for a launch reminder. We will send you the purchase link when the book is released.

Who has the authority to tell you who you are?

That question is at the center of my new book, I Am Not a Black Man: Embracing True Identity. I have lived through a time when a label could determine where a person was welcome. I know those realities matter. I also believe no one else’s judgment has the authority to define the whole person.
