Our WIC Food of the Month is Winter Squash! 💛

👀Did you know?
Despite its name, winter squash is actually harvested in autumn! There are several varieties of winter squash, including acorn, buttercup squash, delicata, dumpling squash, kabocha, butternut and spaghetti squash. It can be stored for months in a cool/dry place, making it a sustainable option for meals and snacks.

🥗What are the benefits of eating squash?
Many varieties of squash are high in Vitamin A, which helps support vision, skin health, as well as a healthy immune system. Squash is also high in fiber, which helps keep tummies full and happy. Its potassium content additionally helps support heart health.

🔪How do I prepare it?
There are several options for enjoying winter squash. You can roast cubes with oil and seasoning, blend them into soups/sauces, spiralize or shred spaghetti squash as an alternative to pasta, try varieties of stuffed squash, or puree into oatmeal/muffins, or smoothies!

👶Picky eater?

Heading Back to School

As summer comes to an end, the time to get back into daily school routines begins. One of the most important parts of that routine that we tend to forget - is good nutrition.

Healthy eating is important at every age, but especially in growing kiddos. Research has shown there is a close connection between nutrition and learning. A healthy diet can improve your child’s ability to focus, memory, brain function, behavior and overall mood. And it doesn’t have to be complicated!

Start the Day with a Healthy Breakfast.
This meal is what starts the day. Research shows children who eat breakfast will pay better attention in class and remember more of what they are learning. Planning breakfasts ahead of time can also make a busy morning much less stressful!

Build a Balanced Lunchbox.
Whether your kiddo packs lunch daily or occasionally, a balanced lunch is needed to finish the day strong. Try to include several food groups to provide a variety of nutrients. Adding a variety of options helps prevent “lunch fatigue” and encourages kiddos to try a wider range of healthy foods.

Don’t Forget to Pack a Water Bottle.
Hydration is just as important as healthy foods. Research shows that even mild dehydration can affect concentration, mood and physical performance. Choosing water instead of sugary beverages helps reduce added sugar intake. Let your kiddo choose a fun reusable water bottle, this can make drinking water more enjoyable!

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be perfect. As your family settles into the new school year, choose one habit to focus on. These small changes will eventually build into lifelong healthy habits outside of the school year!

And remember to head to WIC Online Nutrition Education - wichealth.org to find breakfast, lunch and snack ideas for your kiddos! You can even find recipes through eKitchen!

Let’s celebrate Kids Eat Right Month!

In August, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages parents and caregivers to celebrate the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles for children and their families. School-age children can be challenging because they are becoming more independent and may start eating more meals away from the family. However, this is the perfect time to reevaluate habits and take steps to make positive changes:

Shop Smart: Plan your meals and create a shopping list before going to the store. Get the kiddos involved in selecting foods that will appear at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Eat Together: Gather around the table as a family to enjoy a wonderful meal everyone helps make and have the opportunity to share how everyone’s day went with one another. Family meals encourage healthy family relationships but also great eating habits.

Create Healthful Habits: Serve as a role model to help your kids develop healthy habits. They observe you more than you realize!

Get Talking: Eating nutritious foods can sometimes be a challenge for kids, particularly if they are picky eaters, but experts say that conversation can help. Talk to your kiddos about the foods they enjoy and introduce them to new foods from a variety of cultures to expand their exposure!

Indigenous Milk Medicine Week (IMMW) is celebrated from August 8–14 which honors breastfeeding as a sacred cultural and biological practice passed down through generations.

🔥This year the theme is "We Keep the Fires Lit: Rising Through the Milk Medicine." IMMW invites individuals to return to their roots, speak their truths, and uplift lactation as a practice that protects, connects, and strengthens communities across generations.
