Let’s make this year Fiber-ful!

Everyone always talks about eating more fiber, but why is that?

It’s an essential part of a healthy diet. It helps with digestion, keeps kiddos tummies full longer and can even help support heart health. A low fiber diet has been linked to numerous childhood health concerns such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and constipation. However, this can be prevented by eating more fiber!

How much fiber should I be giving my child?

A simple way to make sure your children are getting enough is by making mindful healthy food choices. If your child is eating at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day along with other foods that are good sources of fiber, there really is no need to count fiber grams.

What are good sources of fiber?

Vegetables
Fruit
Beans
Peas
Nuts
Fiber-rich whole grain breads and cereals

Important to remember when adding more fiber to your child’s diet:

Do it slowly to prevent gas and bloating!
It is also important to make sure to INCREASE fluid intake. They should be drinking at least 1-2 cups more than their usual intake.

For more information on a fiber-rich diet and recipes reach out to your local WIC nutritionist or follow the link below:
