Angus Mullis McCord presented a fascinating presentation on the American Chestnut Trees that once were massive giants spreading Southwood from Maine all through the Appalachian Mountains. Efforts have been underway in splicing them with other trees which are immune to the Chinese blight that originally devastated those humongous beauties. Learn more and get seeds at https://tacf.org/

What a pleasure for our treasurer Kathy Boone to award $1,000 scholarship and Ruritan Mug to new ETSU freshman, ELI CHURCH of Newland, NC in Avery County! Besides mastering his Blue Grass music with fiddle studies, Eli also plans to teach music to carry on our culture and the joy music brings. He’s quite good at golf, and an awesome support to us at Foscoe Ruritan, as well as the heartwarming and very helpful Three Nails Hardware his father, Lynn, revived in Newland.

Thank you Bob Griffin for sharing your information about the floods that happened in Watauga over the last 125 years. And a big shout out of thanks to everyone who attended our Foscoe Ruritan Local History Dinner this evening. We had a full house and even ran short of food.

FRI. AUG. 28, 5:30 pm….Great NC floods of 1916 & 1940 compared to Helene, presented by travel & history author, Bob Griffin of Vale Crucis, NC and IRB, FL.

$15 full spaghetti dinner with all the fixings & desserts supports scholarships (incl the trades), food and aid to local students and families. 6:15-7pm history presentation.

🤓 SCARS on the MOUNTAIN documentary re 5 NC communities that slid down the mountain during Helene will be shown afterwards for those who wish to stay.

Wayne Underwood enlightened us July 24 on the history of ASU founder’s Dougherty house in Boone NC that was to be demolished to make room for university expansion. Through perseverance, grit and deep desire to preserve our Blue Ridge heritage, he navigated the numerous legal challenges in order to finally give it a new home at his fascinating, fun, Mystery Hill in Blowing Rock, NC. It’s free to visit now, and in the process of becoming a local history site of this blue ridge mountain area.
