Grateful for Friday...and Looking Ahead 🌞

More snaps to share from the planting day on Friday. It was day filled with sunshine, volunteers, and real conservation impact for the High Country. 💛

Fast forward a few days ahead, and Mother Nature has other plans. With the current winter weather advisory in effect, we're postponing our Charter Ceremony & Social originally scheduled for this evening.

New Date: Monday, March 30th
Same Time / Same Place

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We can't wait to celebrate together next month!

What an amazing day along the Watauga River!

With the help of incredible volunteers (including several students, two very dedicated doggy mascots + one adorable two-year-old supervisor), we planted over 5,000 live stakes and trees to protect and restore this beautiful river corridor.

One of my all-time favorite workdays…big heart, big impact, tiny helpers. 🐶👦
Thanks again to (we love partnering with you) and everyone who showed up with muddy boots and big smiles on a gorgeous day. Good seeing out there too!

Onward for wildlife conservation and the High Country we love! Next up, you can celebrate our official “chapterhood” at our Chartering Ceremony & Social tomorrow night at 6PM at beautiful campus of ! Come at 5PM to be part of our in-person board meeting. We are still putting on the finishing touches for this year’s event calendar! www.highcountrywild.org/events for details and registration link. Hope to see you there!

Well…. I was really beginning to wonder if our High Country weather would ever allow our Live Stake and Tree Planting Workday to happen. Today was finally our day, and it was well worth the wait! Under a beautiful blue sky, wearing only light jackets, our group planted tons of live stakes and trees along the Watauga River. A big thanks to for their partnership, the volunteers who showed up and got their hands dirty, and for its Trees for Wildlife Program. Event photos and videos coming soon! mountaintrue

Just a reminder that the Eco Happy Hour is coming up on Tuesday, February 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Coyote Kitchen in Boone. We hope you’ll join the Blue Ridge Group of the Sierra Club and High Country Wild chapter of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation for an evening of casual conversation with others who care about the environment and conservation in Watauga County. It’s a great chance to find out what other groups are up to and work out how we can come together to solve environmental problems in the High Country.

Join other local environmental groups, community members, and area officials to connect, share ideas, and promote sustainability efforts across the High Country.

The event is free. Sierra Club will provide some appetizers. Mast Store has provided some door prizes to give away. And Coyote Kitchen’s wonderful menu and drink selection will also be available.

Here’s what to expect:
— Informal networking with like-minded folks
— Light snacks (beverages and additional foods available for purchase)
— Door prizes and short introductions/announcements

We look forward to seeing you there!

On January 8th, High Country Wild + MountainTrue, with the assistance of many volunteers, planted over 5,000 livestakes at Valle Crucis Community Park along the Watauga River and Dutch Creek.

Huge thanks to the National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife Program for making this possible! We planted a variety of species including silky willow, silky dogwood, elderberry, and much more! Valle Crucis Community Park contains riparian forest, wetland, and meadow habitat which supports a mosaic of wildlife. Planting these native species is an effort to increase biodiversity, enhance wildlife habitat, reduce erosion, and ensure that generations to come can enjoy the natural beauty of Valle Crucis Community Park.

A full photo album is available our website - highcountrywild.org/past-events.

Our next live stake entry planting workday is planned for Saturday, January 31 at noon. Visit our website for more details and to register. Hope to see you there!

Live Staking & Tree Planting Workday Postponed!

As much as we'd love to pretend we're in control of our calendar, Mother Nature has reminded us (quite firmly) who's actually in charge. She's made it clear that our January 19th live staking and tree planting workday needs to wait.

Our new date is January 31st (weather permitting, of course).

Thank you for your flexibility, your enthusiasm, and your willingness to get your hands in the dirt for a good cause. We'll share update as we get closer to our new date. In the meantime, stay warm!

🌿 Tomorrow’s the Day!
High Country Wild is kicking off its first event of the 2026 season — and we’re teaming up with our incredible Partner for Wildlife to make it happen.

We’ll be diving into live staking, a hands-on conservation method that helps stabilize streambanks, reduce erosion, and restore critical riparian habitat. It’s simple, impactful, and one of the most rewarding ways to support the landscapes and wildlife that make the High Country special.

✨ It’s not too late to join us!
Register through the link in our bio or on the Events page of our website. Highcountrywild.org/events

Let’s start the season strong — for the land, for the water, and for the wildlife.
See you there!
