This LGBTQ+ History Month, FreeState Justice celebrates John Waters, a Baltimore-born filmmaker whose distinctive work has made him an enduring q***r cultural icon.

Known for films such as Pink Flamingos and Hairspray, Waters has challenged conventional ideas about gender, sexuality, and respectability through his irreverent approach to filmmaking. We honor his influence on q***r art and culture and his role in putting Baltimore at the center of a distinctive chapter in LGBTQ+ entertainment history.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, FreeState Justice recognizes Richard Madaleno, a former Maryland legislator whose work helped advance LGBTQ+ equality across the state.

After serving in the House of Delegates, Madaleno represented Montgomery County in the Maryland Senate, where he played a leading role in the effort to secure marriage equality in Maryland. We honor his commitment to public service and his contributions to expanding rights and recognition for LGBTQ+ Marylanders.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, FreeState Justice honors Paulette Young, a Black le***an organizer whose leadership helped shape Baltimore’s early LGBTQ+ movement.

As one of the original co-chairs of the Baltimore Gay Alliance, Young helped establish community resources and later became the first president of the Gay Community Center of Baltimore, now Pride Center of Maryland. We celebrate her pioneering work to build spaces for connection, advocacy, and support for LGBTQ+ Marylanders.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, FreeState Justice celebrates Heather Mizeur, a former Montgomery County delegate whose public service contributed to greater LGBTQ+ visibility in Maryland politics.

Elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2006, Mizeur served as an openly le***an legislator and became an important figure in the state’s history of LGBTQ+ representation. We recognize her role in helping make space for LGBTQ+ people to lead openly in public life.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, FreeState Justice recognizes Delegate Joe Vogel , a Maryland legislator helping bring LGBTQ+ representation into the next generation of public service.

Elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2022, Vogel serves as vice chair of the Maryland Legislative LGBTQ+ Caucus and works on issues affecting Maryland communities. We celebrate his role in strengthening LGBTQ+ visibility in the legislature and continuing the work toward a more equitable state.

Maryland trailblazer. National impact.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, FreeState Justice celebrates Senator Mary Washington, whose leadership has helped shape Maryland’s future and expand representation in public service.

Elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2010, Senator Washington made history as Maryland’s first openly LGBTQ+ African American elected official—and the second in the nation. Today, she represents Baltimore’s 43rd District in the Maryland Senate, continuing to champion equity and opportunity for Marylanders.

We honor her legacy and the example she sets for LGBTQ+ leaders across the country.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, FreeState Justice is honoring Maryland locals whose work and legacy deserve recognition on a national stage.

Today, we remember Carlton R. Smith Jr., affectionately known as “The Duchess.” A beloved Black LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS activist, Carlton helped build and celebrate Baltimore’s Black LGBTQ+ community as a co-founder of Blaq Equity Baltimore and a leader in Baltimore BLAQ Pride.

His advocacy and lived experience helped advance the fight to end HIV criminalization in Maryland. Carlton’s impact reaches far beyond our state, and his legacy lives on in the communities he loved.
