Artists are using the Web in hundreds of ways to cheaply and effectively promote their work. So how do you decide the best marketing approach to get your venture noticed by the right audience? In the weekend course: Promoting Your Arts Venture Online, you will learn about the various strategies, techniques, and Web sites that can help grow your art-related business. We will also explore different marketing strategies that have been used by other artists, By the end of this course, you will design and kick off a marketing plan for your own venture.

Jane Rubini is teaching THE ADVERTISING ART DIRECTOR...class "meets" online. To register, go to www.mica.edu/professionaldevelopment. Jane Rubini, one of the leading art directors in the Washington/Baltimore area, kicked off her advertising career on Madison Avenue in the 1980s. Her work for Evian, Gourmet Magazine, Nintendo and Laughing Cow Cheese garnered her national Clio and Addy awards, and established her as someone who produces television, print and direct mail with elegance and panache. For the past fifteen years, Jane has freelanced for advertising agencies and clients throughout Baltimore / Washington . She has created breakthrough advertising and public affairs campaigns – including web, print, direct mail and broadcast -- for clients that include Inter-Continental Hotels and Resorts, Holy Cross Hospital, National Aquarium in Baltimore and Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Jane is the current Coordinator for Professional Development Cirriculum / MICA School for Professional and Continuing Studies as well as a teacher and Creative Director at Rubini Creative.

CONQUERING THE NEW ADVERTISING LANDSCAPE, ONE PIXEL AT A TIME—Instructor: Craig Strydom, Saturdays, 9:30am -1pm, 2/12-4/30, $585. The much beloved 30-second TV commercial is dead. To survive today's newly defined media landscape, creatives and ad agencies alike need to adapt. In this hands-on, media-rich and experiential class, we will attempt to understand what it takes to create breakthrough advertising in today's cluttered and unpredictable world. We will look at advertising techniques, old and new, and discover why all are equally relevant. This class will explore creative methodologies from the 'Selling Idea' to the 'Creative Leap' to 'Disruption' and beyond. In the process we will attempt to hunt down the illusive logic governing the powerful, yet unpredictable 'viral' ad. Computer skills a plus. Curiosity mandatory.

Craig Strydom writes and directs to put bread and Prada on the table. More than anything, he loves advertising that blurs the conventional distinctions between what constitutes advertising and what constitutes entertainment. That’s why, over and above the scores of TV commercials he’s written and produced, he’s also had his hand in the conceptualization and direction of virals, web-documentaries, webisodes, and various other forms of advertainment.

Fred Scharmen earned his Master’s Degree in Architecture at Yale University in 2006, and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the University of Maryland, College Park in 2001. Since finishing his Masters Degree, Fred has worked on projects for diverse practices, twice traveling to Asia while involved with large urban proposals. In 2006 Fred was in Singapore for Greg Lynn FORM, collaborating with Gehry Partners on a 2km long resort, casino, aquarium, and water park. In 2008 Fred traveled to Inner Mongolia on behalf of Keller Easterling Architects to present a house and small, sustainable arts colony for the ORDOS100 master plan.

Fred has worked locally with Baltimore architects Alexander Design Studio and Ziger/Snead. In 2010, Evergreen Commons, a project produced in collaboration with C. Ryan Patterson and Eric Leshinsky, was awarded 'Best Site Specific Work' by the Baltimore City Paper. In addition to independent solo work, research and consulting in art, public art, interaction, sustainability, and design, Fred has taught design studio at the University of Maryland College Park, Morgan State University, and MICA.

What does the International Space Station have to do with a green roof? How can water flow influence neighborhood boundaries? What can the city of Baltimore do with over 30,000 vacant properties? Loops, a 1.5 credit weekend course from the Professional Development program at the Maryland Institute College of art will explore the possibilities for architecture and design to intervene in the flows of material, energy, and people, in order to create a more sustainable city.
