Check out this article on Kawaii Vida (), the new DIY craft studio, café, and claw machine hot spot at 430 S. Highland Ave. The Baltimore Business Journal describes the journey that took owners Valerie Nuñez and her husband Muhammad Sawwan from traveling in Japan to opening up the neighborhood's cutest Japanese-inspired gathering place!

A Project Restore Highlandtown grant helped Nuñez and Sawwan renovate their building and start their business. Big thanks to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development for funding this community revitalization program.

Tonight, 5-9PM! The Highlandtown First Friday Art Walk has 25+ participating venues! And that includes Kawaii Vida, the *brand new* cafe-craft studio and claw-machine hot spot. Our local businesses are bursting with new art exhibitions, pop-up shops and great deals! Come on down and enjoy the community atmosphere, inspiring art, and delicious food with us! Cheers to Kawaii Vida (), a new DIY craft studio, café, and claw machine hot spot in Highlandtown! Makers of all levels are welcome in this lively, community hangout!

Valerie Nunez, a Latina with a passion for anime and Asian cultures, named the shop Kawaii (Japanese for “cute”), Vida (Spanish for “life”). After traveling in Japan, Nunez and her husband/business partner, Muhammad Sawwan, wanted to capture their unforgettable experience by opening an all-in-one business that celebrates kawaii!

This business launch was made possible through Project Restore Highlandtown, a program funded by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The program aims to reduce the number of vacant commercial properties by providing qualified entrepreneurs with resources to renovate and create businesses in them.

As the final Project Restore Highlandtown awardee, Kawaii Vida is in wonderful company: they join Highwire Improv, HarpVision, and Bao Di Baltimore. Together, these ventures demonstrate Project Restore Highlandtown’s commitment to fostering businesses that strengthen the community's creative identity.
