Connecting volunteer buglers with families and organizations across America, bringing those 24 notes of Taps to life—notes that speak of gratitude, service, and love of country. Only 24 notes — but whose clear, sad tones conjure up memories of loved ones lost, instill hope, and bring comfort and peace to the families and communities of those whom have served with honor. It’s the song that gives us a lump in our throats, and brings tears to our eyes…

Sadly, the legacy of Taps’ honorable performance is in jeopardy. TAPS FOR VETERANS provides an opportunity for buglers or trumpet players to sound Taps for military veteran’s funerals and ceremonies. With the military unable to provide live buglers for every military funeral and ceremony, TAPS FOR VETERANS is assisting to help provide that much needed service. TAPS FOR VETERANS is an organization led by former military musicians and active and retired military veterans who acutely understand the importance of properly sounding Taps, our “National Song of Remembrance” as a way of expressing the nation’s gratitude for a veteran’s service.

🇺🇸⚓ Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Navy! ⚓🇺🇸

251 years of service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to our nation.

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the Continental Navy. What began with a small fleet and a determined group of patriots grew into a proud tradition of service that continues today.

For 251 years, generations of American Sailors have answered the call of duty. They’ve spent countless days and nights at sea, missed birthdays, holidays, and special moments with loved ones, and stood watch far from home so that others could rest safely.

But the story of the U.S. Navy isn’t just about ships, submarines, aircraft, or battles fought.

It’s about people. ❤️🤍💙

It’s about the young Sailor leaving home for the first time. The veteran who still carries the pride of having served. The families who wave goodbye at the pier, counting the days until their loved ones return. And the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and never made it home.

Today, we honor every one of them.

To those currently serving, those who have served, and the families who stand beside them: Thank you. Your courage, commitment, and sacrifices will never be forgotten.

As we celebrate 251 years of Navy history, may we always remember that behind every uniform is a person, behind every deployment is a family, and behind every chapter of naval history are countless stories of courage and sacrifice.

When a veteran passes away, families are often grieving while also trying to make important decisions quickly. In those moments, it can be hard to know what to ask.

One question that matters deeply is:
Will “Taps” be played by a live bugler?

Every veteran deserves to be honored with dignity. Military funeral honors may include the folding and presentation of the American flag, and the playing of “Taps” — a final tribute that carries so much meaning for the family, fellow veterans, and everyone gathered to remember a life of service.

While recordings are sometimes used, you can request a live bugler through Taps for Veterans.

Before the service, ask your funeral director, cemetery, or veterans service representative about military honors, and be sure to request a live bugler from Taps for Veterans.

It is a simple question, but it can make a lasting difference.

Because the final notes of “Taps” should be more than a sound — they should be a heartfelt tribute to a veteran’s service, sacrifice, and legacy.

The second pillar of Taps for Veterans - Serve the family

A family shouldn’t have to wonder whether the bugler will be there. They have enough on their minds.

So we arrive early. We introduce ourselves. We work with the funeral director and military funeral honors team to understand where to stand and when to begin.

These are small things we can take care of so the family has one less thing to carry.

That is what Serve the Family, our second standard, means in practice.

When we raise the horn, someone sitting nearby is saying goodbye to a person they have loved for a lifetime. Our responsibility is to be prepared and give that moment the care it deserves.

🎺 From the Royal Canadian Navy to Walla Walla, music has always been at the heart of Kate Jackson’s journey—and we are beyond honored to welcome her to the Taps for Veterans family!

Kate’s musical career began in uniform as a trumpet player in the Royal Canadian Navy. Today, she calls Walla Walla, Washington home, where she performs regularly with the Walla Walla Symphony, plays with local ensembles, and co-founded the Blue Mountain Brass quintet.

Now, Kate brings that rich background and dedication to our mission as a volunteer bugler. In doing so, she offers something deeply personal and irreplaceable: her time, her talent, and her presence to honor our fallen heroes and stand alongside their families when it matters most.

Strangers at the Same Graveside

Sometimes the people standing together at a veteran's funeral have never met before.
Family members, neighbors, fellow veterans, an honor guard, and a volunteer bugler may arrive by different roads. Yet for one brief ceremony, they become a community with a shared purpose.

They stand together because one life connected them. Some knew the veteran for decades. Others know only that this person served and that service deserves to be honored. Taps gives everyone a common language when personal memories and public gratitude meet.

We sound Taps because remembrance should never be left to a family alone. Showing up says that their loved one's service reached beyond the uniform and will be carried by people whose paths may never otherwise have crossed.

True remembrance doesn't end when the ceremony closes and the crowds drift away—it is born in the quiet stillness that follows.

While many stand in honor on marked days, the deepest acts of devotion happen when no one is watching. They are found in the soft rustle of grass as gentle hands kneel to pull away weeds, the tender touch that straightens a small, windblown flag, and the softly spoken name that holds a whole life, a family, and a precious story in the air.

There are no bugles echoing across the grounds in those moments, no speeches, and no applause. Just an unprompted, beautiful choice to keep caring.

To everyone who quietly walks these sacred places and holds our veterans close in these gentle, ordinary ways: thank you. You are the humble guardians of their legacy, keeping their memory warm and alive in a world that moves so fast. 🇺🇸
