Blind Industries and Services of Maryland

Blind Industries and Services of Maryland For over 100 years, Blind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM) has been changing blind and low vision people’s lives for the better.

BISM offers comprehensive education, rehabilitation and training programs along with diverse employment opportunities for blind people in the Greater Baltimore area. Unemployment among the blind is around 70%, and we work tirelessly to fix that. BISM provides diverse career opportunities to over 650 associates (the majority of whom are blind), in everything from customer service to manufacturing.

In addition to employment opportunities, BISM offers nationally-recognized rehabilitation and independence training programs. Our programs are free to Maryland residents and are designed to teach blind people of all ages how to be self-sufficient and how to succeed at home, in school, and in the workplace. We have an uncompromising belief in the capabilities of people who are blind and every day we see that belief borne out in the accomplishments of our associates and students. Purpose
We positively change people’s attitudes about blindness. Mission
To provide stable career opportunities, innovative rehabilitation programs, quality products and services, and to develop resources for training and education. Vision
Our organization is an internationally recognized leader whose associates provide evolving opportunities for blind people and others.

“People present this almost legalistic argument: you present a danger to yourself and others,” said Alfred T. D’Agostino, Board Secretary. “That drives me crazy. It’s an attitude that employers — not only academic employers — use to exclude blind people from doing certain things.”

His answer has never been argument. It has been presence. He walks into the lecture hall with his cane. He boots up JAWS, runs his PowerPoint, and teaches.

It’s and we’re shining a spotlight on the role technology plays in helping deafblind individuals live more independently!

Tools such as refreshable braille displays and note-takers, screen readers for phones and computers, vibration-based alerts, and assistive communication devices provide greater access to information, communication, education, and employment. Use of these tools make it easier for deafblind people to navigate their communities, stay connected, and participate more fully in everyday life.

Human resources at any organization is a balancing act. But what does it look like when your workforce includes blind and low-vision employees, and your mission includes employment itself?

In the latest episode of , Qualik Ford and Derique Simon welcome two of the people behind that work: Jaeah Fortune, HR Director at BISM, and Terri Walker, HR Generalist. Together, they pull back the curtain on the day-to-day realities of supporting a workforce as unique as BISM's. And because even the people who take care of everyone else need to take care of themselves, Jaeah and Terri also get candid about how they unwind, recharge, and find balance outside the office.

It’s BISM’s Giving Day!

Can you help us raise $4,000 in 24 hours?

With these funds, we’ll be able to update the kitchen that is home to one of our most essential training programs: independent living. In the kitchen, students learn how to meal prep, organize food and household items, and cook meals independently.

Let’s do this!

Calling all parents of elementary students! Did you know BISM offers one- and two-week long camps on the Eastern Shore tailored to enhancing blindness skills through a unique blend of adventure and learning?

Students embark on a journey of discovery, navigating diverse environments and refining their mobility and sensory skills in unfamiliar settings. Engaging group activities foster teamwork, communication, and effective time management—essential life skills that extend beyond the camp experience.
