Special Olympics Maryland is a year-round sports organization dedicating to providing life-changing sports training and competition opportunities to Maryland's citizens with intellectual disabilities. SOMD currently serves thousands of athletes statewide, and offers 28 sports, all at no cost to the athletes or their families.

Meet Kelsey Franklin from Baltimore County 📞🥇🇺🇸

Kelsey Franklin of Baltimore County is a dedicated Special Olympics Maryland athlete competing in track & field, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, swimming, and soccer—and she is proudly preparing to represent Maryland at the USA Games.

Kelsey’s journey is one of resilience and growth. From returning to competition after surgery to completing a 5K race, she continues to push herself in sport and in life. She first discovered her love for cheerleading through Special Olympics and went on to join a Cheerabilities All-Star team, building confidence, friendships, and lifelong motivation along the way.

She is passionate about staying active, caring for the environment, and learning from the people around her who inspire her every day.

As she prepares for USA Games, Kelsey is focused on staying strong, healthy, and ready for this incredible opportunity.

Giving back to the communities we serve is something we're proud to be a part of 💙

Our team alongside our Constellation Energy team recently volunteered at the Special Olympics Maryland Baltimore City Spring Games, where more than 400 student athletes came together for a day of competition, teamwork, and fun.

Thank you to the athletes, coaches, volunteers, and organizers for making it such an inspiring event. We're grateful to have been a part of it!

ICYMI – Several Special Olympics Athletes Leave their Mark at Penn Relays

The Penn Relays has a rich history. The first Penn Relays took place on Franklin Field in 1895. Well known athletes such as Jesse Owens, Jim Thorpe, Carl Lewis and the current world record holder in the men’s 100-meter dash, Usain Bolt competed at The Penn Relays. (Bolt set the world record of running 100 meters in 9.58 seconds in 2009 at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany.)

Elizabeth Malcolm won the Special Olympics Girls 100-meter dash in 14.08 seconds at the 130th running of The Penn Relays, held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in late April. Special Olympics Maryland athlete, Bailey Mewhinney was recently named Knight of the Month by his local KofC Council 9968! This recognition reflects his dedication to serving on his church's and his outstanding leadership with Special Olympics Maryland as both an Athlete Leader and athlete.
