Hi stargazers! In late August and early September, look for 2 hints of the changing season in the predawn sky: the Hunter and the Dog Star. Orion and his iconic Belt rise before dawn at this time of year. And the sky’s brightest star, Sirius - also known as the Dog Star, in the constellation Canis Major the Greater Dog - follows Orion into the sky as the predawn darkness gives way to dawn. 🌌

National Dog Day

A dog is more than a pet. It watches the door, warns in the dark, keeps company in silence and becomes part of the life of a home.

In the surviving mythology, hounds appear near difficult boundaries. Garmr howls before Gnipahellir and in Baldrs draumar a blood marked hound comes from Hel to meet Óðinn on the road to Niflhel. These are separate images rather than one fixed doctrine about dogs, but both place the hound near warning and the passage beyond.

That image still feels familiar. Dogs notice what we miss, remain close when words fail and keep watch over the thresholds of our lives. Today we honor the dogs who guard our homes and find their way into our hearts. Some guardians walk on four legs.

Share a photo or speak the name of the hound at your hearth.
