Up close on the alien-like inflorescence of the passionvine (Passiflora incarnata). 🔍

Check out the corona (the purple filaments radiating out of the center) and the stigma (the triple protrusion out from the center of the flower). These fragrant flowers bloom from May to July, hosting butterflies and other pollinators, and then produce passionfruit - or maypops - through the fall.

We just can't get enough of these little guys. 🥲

Baby rock squirrel doing its morning routine, which apparently involves crunching on rocks, stretching, and being surprised by breakfast. Same, kid. Same.

🔍 Wildlife Watch: Rock Squirrel!

If you've noticed more squirrels in the Hartman Prehistoric Garden lately, you're not imagining it - lots of baby rock squirrels are out and about! Found throughout the Southwest and Mexico, this large species of squirrel (Otospermophilus variegatus) is a common sight in rocky habitats, where they dig deep burrows under ledges to hide out and store food in.

Next time you're in the Garden, keep an eye out for adults and youngsters scampering over the rocks, wrestling with siblings, and exploring the world beyond the burrow.

🐝 Curious about Austin’s native bees? Join us on Saturday, June 27, from 9:30 AM–12:00 PM at Zilker Botanical Garden for Bee-O-Diversity!

Presented by Lindsay Loftin, Master Naturalist + Community Gardens Program Coordinator for Austin Parks and Recreation Department, and founder of the Native Bee Monitoring Project, this engaging program explores the incredible diversity of native bees found right here in Central Texas. 🌼
