Austin Soundwaves Austin Soundwaves makes learning music accessible and equitable.

Austin Soundwaves launched on October 17, 2011 by giving 41 students the opportunity to learn the violin, viola, cello, or percussion. Students receive an instrument, as well as all supplies, lesson books, and at least 10 hours of weekly instruction by expert teaching artists free of charge. After less than two months practicing with instruments, the Austin Soundwaves Orchestra gave its debut performance on December 19, 2011 to a “packed house” of family, friends, and community supporters. One audience member wrote to HAPA immediately after the performance:

“I loved every minute of it—the room packed with proud families; the kids marching in so seriously, like real musicians; the buildup to the two group performances, and the very loud and genuine applause. [It’s] amazing that you have brought the kids so far in six weeks; you should be super proud!”

This is just the beginning for HAPA and Austin Soundwaves. What the students accomplished in six weeks was indeed remarkable, and it is astounding to think about what they are capable of accomplishing in six months and six years. Austin Soundwaves will add woodwinds and brass instruments in early 2012, thereby increasing the number of students we are able to serve and creating a full symphony orchestra.

Some words from our Executive Director Patrick Slevin on the passing of Mr. Joe R. Long.

"I learned some foundational lessons over 15 years of answering questions from Mr. Long:

Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Be ready to answer why, without subtext or spin.
If you mess up and miss a target, own it.
And most importantly, always know your numbers.

Some of my most cherished moments with Mr. Long came over the past few years during visits to his home. We'd make small talk, I'd share updates about how our students were doing in college and their careers, and we'd watch a few performance videos together. We also regularly hosted performances at his building, open to all the residents. I smile when I think of Mr. Long singing along loudly to a holiday program, enjoying some sweets, or conducting along to a Beethoven string quartet. The same Mr. Long who taught me to answer questions directly and know my numbers was also reminding me to have fun, explore my passions, and cherish art.

When I think back to my first few years of knowing Joe and Terry Long, “the head and the heart” would have been an accurate description of how I understood their relationship with me and Austin Soundwaves (I'll let you decide who was which). But time has a beautiful way of complicating first impressions. Mrs. Long was as sharp and tough as anyone I've ever known. And Mr. Joe R. Long, with his direct questions, high expectations, and insistence on knowing the numbers, had a heart as big as Texas."

Last month the Hispanic Women's Network of Texas awarded our beloved board president, Lupe Morin, with the 2026 Madrina Award. This award is given to inspiring women in leadership who are sources of strength, compassion, and perseverance to their communities.

Lupe has been an integral part of Austin Soundwaves' story over the years, and we are beyond thrilled to see her advocacy and service to a multitude of organizations be recognized this way.

Music is for all ages, including babies!

Our Baby's First Symphony series, in collaboration with the Austin Public Library, creates a space for infants ages 0-18 months and their families to gather and enjoy classical music together.

Listening to music helps support early childhood learning and development — and now you don't have to wait until your children are older to bring them to their first concert. Our next performance will be Friday, October 23 from 12:30-1:30pm at the Windsor Park Branch. No RSVP needed!

We are thrilled to be a recipient of the Grant for Technology Opportunities Program by Austin Economic Development! Thank you to Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison for presenting a city proclamation to celebrate the work this program is doing to address the digital divide. It was wonderful getting to reconnect with friends from across the nonprofit sector.

(In fact, there were so many friends present that Mary T. and Julia had to wait outside during the proclamation! 😂)
