Thank you for joining us for a special morning at Morning Glories: Back to School! 📚🌱✨

Together we enjoyed storytime with Nick Solis, a performance by the Del Valle High School Cardinal band, line dance lessons with Vonda White and DJ Ghost, a special appearance by H·E·Buddy, and so much more more to kick off the school year! 🎒

This event would not be possible without the generosity of our wonderful sponsors, H-E-B, Delta Air Lines, and Waterloo Sparkling Water. 💚

With 1,600 new trees planted at Waterloo Greenway Phase II, you can find familiar and unique species throughout our 13-acre area between 4th Street and Lady Bird Lake. 🌳

A few trees you can find that aren’t as commonly seen, but are great Texas natives include:

• Huisache: Distinguishable by its puffball yellow flowers and are used as an ingredient in perfumes. 💛
• Anacacho Orchid: Got its name because the flowers resemble an orchid. 🌺
• Roughleaf dogwood: Got its name because of its sandpapery, hair covered upper leaf surface. 🌱
• Texas Persimmon: Research has shown that Indigenous Peoples used the fruit to treat mouth sores and chewed the bark to alleviate heartburn. 🌿

Some more common trees that most people can recognize include: Yaupon Holly, live oak and Bald cypress. Next time you’re out, take a look and see what you can find!

This project was supported by the City of Austin’s Urban Forest Grant, which funded tree purchases, tree care and protection, invasive species removal, and soil work at The Confluence. 💚

The Confluence was created in partnership between the Waterloo Greenway Conservancy and the City of Austin including Austin Watershed Protection, Austin Parks and Recreation, Capital Delivery Services, and Austin Climate Action and Resilience.
