Many of us grew up hearing—or even using—the R-word casually.

“I don’t mean it that way.”

Intent matters. But so does impact.

Understanding why a word can hurt gives us the opportunity to choose differently. We have plenty of other words to describe something foolish, frustrating, ridiculous, or bad.

Changing one word is simple. The message it sends can be powerful.
Don’t normalize it. Retire it.

The R-word is often used as an insult for a person, decision, or situation that has nothing to do with disability.

But think about what makes it an insult.

When a disability-related word is used to mean stupid, ridiculous, incompetent, or bad, it sends a message about the people that word has historically described—even when they aren’t in the room.

You don’t have to be talking about someone with an intellectual disability for the word to hurt.

Don’t normalize it. Retire it.

Words matter. People matter more.

Most of us know the R-word shouldn’t be used to describe a person with an intellectual disability. But what about using it to describe a bad decision, a ridiculous situation, or something we think is stupid?

At CLA, we think it’s time to retire the R-word altogether.

Changing our language isn’t about shaming the past. It’s about what we choose going forward.

Don’t normalize it. Retire it.
