Access to books strengthens so much more than reading skills!

Students at La Democracia Elementary School are making great use of their reading corner we installed in partnership with Summit Honduras. After choosing books for independent reading, they created a presentation about the benefits of reading, highlighting how it strengthens creativity, empathy, concentration, and the ability to self-reflect.

These kiddos already understand that reading helps us grow, both as readers and as people. ❤

Los estudiantes de la Escuela La Democracia están aprovechando al máximo el rincón de lectura que instalamos en alianza con Summit Honduras. Después de elegir libros para leer de manera independiente, prepararon una presentación sobre los beneficios de la lectura, destacando cómo fortalece la creatividad, la empatía, la concentración y la capacidad de autorreflexión.

During our library inauguration fairs, we read Chalk, a wordless book in which children’s drawings come to life. Then, we give each child a piece of chalk to bring their own wildest dreams to life on paper!

Give by September 12 so we can pack everything up and send it to Honduras for our 2027 schools!

Inviting families into the library is always part of Chispa Project’s model. After each library installation, we host a family workshop to introduce parents to the new space and share concrete tools they can use to foster literacy at home and support their children’s reading at school. Parents can play a powerful role in nurturing curiosity, motivating young readers, and helping children discover an interest in books.

We love seeing that connection continue at Alejandro Alvarenga Elementary School, where librarian Profe Karina welcomed families back into the library during Family Month. Parents were invited to join their children for special reading time in the library, creating an atmosphere of connection centered around books.

This experience was especially significant because it strengthened the connection between home, school, and the library - the trifecta that is essential for fostering a love of reading!

Invitar a las familias a conocer y disfrutar la biblioteca siempre forma parte del modelo de Chispa Project. Después de cada instalación, realizamos un taller para presentarles este nuevo espacio y compartir herramientas concretas que les permitan fomentar la lectura en casa y apoyar el desarrollo lector de sus hijos también desde la escuela. Las familias pueden desempeñar un papel poderoso al despertar la curiosidad, motivar a los pequeños lectores y ayudarles a descubrir el gusto por los libros.

Nos encanta ver cómo ese vínculo continúa fortaleciéndose en la CEB Alejandro Alvarenga, donde la bibliotecaria, la profe Karina, volvió a recibir a las familias durante el Mes de la Familia. Los padres fueron invitados a compartir un momento especial de lectura con sus hijos en la biblioteca, creando un ambiente de convivencia y conexión alrededor de los libros.

Esta experiencia fue especialmente significativa porque fortaleció la conexión entre el hogar, la escuela y la biblioteca: ¡los tres pilares esenciales para fomentar el amor por la lectura!

We continue to reach farther and farther to spread a love of reading and equip teachers to become changemakers in their communities!

Through our partnership with Deutsch Honduranische Gesellschaft (DHG), 21 teachers from the La Tigra Educational Network received training in reading comprehension, engaging read-alouds, and strategies for building strong reading habits. Together, we will bring 245 recreational books to 280 students.

This year, we’re using Traveling Backpacks (Mochilas Viajeras) to help books reach the network’s more remote schools. The full collection will be housed at Marco Aurelio Soto Elementary School, while teachers from surrounding rural communities can regularly exchange the books in their backpacks—bringing fresh stories back to their students.

It’s one of the ways Chispa Project adapts our approach to what each community needs, helping books travel across distances that can make access incredibly difficult.

¡Seguimos llegando cada vez más lejos para compartir el amor por la lectura y capacitar a docentes para que sean agentes de cambio en sus comunidades!

A través de nuestra alianza con DHG, 21 docentes de la Red Educativa La Tigra recibieron capacitación en comprensión lectora, lectura en voz alta y estrategias para fortalecer el hábito de la lectura. Juntos, acercaramos 245 libros recreativos a 280 estudiantes.

Este año, estamos utilizando Mochilas Viajeras para llevar los libros a los centros educativos más remotos de la red. La colección completa permanecerá en la Escuela Marco Aurelio Soto, mientras que los docentes de las comunidades rurales cercanas podrán intercambiar periódicamente los libros de sus mochilas y llevar nuevas historias a sus estudiantes.

Esta es una de las formas en que Chispa Project adapta su enfoque a las necesidades de cada comunidad, ayudando a que los libros recorran las distancias que muchas veces dificultan el acceso a la lectura.

Building a reading habit takes practice and support!

In one of our first coaching sessions with every school, Chispa helps teachers put our 3-1-1 Reading Goals into action: reading in class 3 times weekly, visiting the library once weekly, and checking out new books once monthly. At Dr. Miguel Paz Barahona Elementary School, teachers started putting their systems into practice - they learned to use their reading logs and check out books, while students picked new reads to fill their classroom book boxes for the first time.

This school is one step—and one story—closer to a lasting culture of reading!

¡Crear un hábito de lectura requiere práctica y acompañamiento!

En una de nuestras primeras sesiones de acompañamiento con cada centro educativo, Chispa ayuda a los docentes a poner en práctica nuestras Metas de Lectura 3-1-1: leer en clase 3 veces por semana, visitar la biblioteca 1 vez por semana y llevar nuevos libros al aula al menos 1 vez al mes. En el Centro Educativo Dr. Miguel Paz Barahona, los docentes comenzaron a implementar estos sistemas: aprendieron a utilizar sus registros de lectura y a realizar préstamos de libros, mientras los estudiantes escogían nuevas lecturas para llenar por primera vez las cajas de libros de sus aulas.

¡Este centro educativo está un paso —y una historia— más cerca de construir una cultura de lectura duradera!

It takes a thousand small moments to bring a library—and a mural—to life. 🎨📚 Here you can see the mural for our most recent library at José Raúl Castro Elementary School coming together, brushstroke by brushstroke. Behind it is something even bigger: communities coming together across borders to create a joyful space where children can read, learn, and dream.

A great reading corner has something for every reader. That's why we focus on providing every school with a diverse collection that has something for every reading level and every interest under the sun! During their daily fifteen minutes of reading, 9th graders at CEB Nicolás Montes choose from long, complex chapter books, illustrated children’s books, graphic novels, shorter stories, and everything in between.

What matters is helping each student discover the book that captures their attention, ignites their imagination, and inspires them to keep reading. ✨

Una gran rincon de lectura tiene algo para cada lector. Por eso nos enfocamos en brindar a cada escuela una colección diversa, con opciones para todos los niveles de lectura y para todos los intereses imaginables.

📸 This week’s featured need: hand-puppet supplies!

After reading the readers’ theater version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff during our Inauguration Fair, students create their own goat puppets using paper bags, wooden spoons, and googly eyes. This activity often inspires teachers and students long after the fair - we have seen many classes creating puppets and putting on reader's theater performances inspired by their other favorite stories!

Access to books can inspire entire communities to get creative with learning!

Recently, 3 schools where we established reading corners in April came together for their first-ever literacy competition, featuring writing, readers’ theater, public speaking, and more. Students were challenged to write and illustrate original stories, and one proud third grader earned second place for hers! Her teacher credited the new reading corner with helping nurture her growth, creativity, and inspiration.

This is what happens when books become part of a community’s culture: teachers find creative ways to make learning exciting, students discover new ways to express themselves, and stories inspire even more stories.

¡El acceso a los libros puede inspirar a comunidades enteras a aprender de forma creativa!

Recientemente, tres escuelas en las que establecimos rincones de lectura en abril se unieron para celebrar su primer concurso de lectura y escritura, con categorías de redacción, teatro de lectores, oratoria y mucho más. Los estudiantes asumieron el reto de escribir e ilustrar historias originales, ¡y una orgullosa estudiante de tercer grado obtuvo el segundo lugar con su cuento! Su maestra destacó cómo el nuevo rincón de lectura ha contribuido a fomentar su crecimiento, creatividad e inspiración.

Esto es lo que sucede cuando los libros se convierten en parte de la cultura de una comunidad: los docentes encuentran maneras creativas de hacer que el aprendizaje sea emocionante, los estudiantes descubren nuevas formas de expresarse y las historias inspiran aún más historias.
