The Board Essentials: Getting to Great workshop brought together new and experienced board members to dig into the 10 essential functions of nonprofit boards, what it means to be a strong and effective director, and how to do the rewarding work of leading a mission-driven team.

This weekend, The Sacramento Environmental Justice Coalition (Sac EJC), Placer People of Faith Together (PPOFT), (IAF) and others partners hosted a Broad-Based Organizing Training to strengthen community leadership and engagement. The training provided residents, faith leaders, and community partners with organizing skills and strategies to address local challenges. We are inspired to see community members empowered to build relationships, advocate for their communities, and help shape a stronger future for all.

Herb Whitaker has seen the affordable housing crisis from a perspective most don't consider: the courtroom.

As the former managing attorney for Legal Services of Northern California, Placer County's civil legal aid program, Herb told the Board of Supervisors this week that housing was the single largest category of cases the organization handled. Not just by priority, but by volume.

His message was clear: housing is the foundation for family stability, employment and education. When that foundation cracks, everything built on top of it does too. And homelessness, he reminded the Board, is far more expensive and far more complex to solve than affordable housing. Prevention is the smarter investment.

Up to 70% of people who find safety at the Stand Up Placer safe house return to their abuser. Not because they want to. Because they can't afford rent in Placer County.

Gary McDonald with Stand Up Placer brought that reality to the Placer County Board of Supervisors this week. Affordable housing isn't just an economic issue. For survivors of domestic violence and their children, it's a matter of safety.

The Board knows what solutions are available. It's time to fund them. How can we encourage more investment?

Christina Alvarez knows what the housing crisis looks like up close. Through her work with day laborers and service workers, she sees families doubling up with others or sleeping in their cars because there simply is nowhere affordable to go.

This week, Christina brought that reality directly to the Placer County Board of Supervisors, calling on them to follow through on their commitment to add 1,300 units of affordable housing to our community.

This is our county. These are our neighbors. Let the Board know this matters to you.

Herman Barahona with the Sacramento Environmental Justice Coalition brought a message of partnership to the Placer County Board of Supervisors this week: reaching the goal of 1,300 affordable housing units will take creative collaboration across organizations and sectors.

Herman highlighted one example already in motion. Sacramento EJC is partnering with the Latino Leadership Council's new Community Development Corporation not just to build new affordable housing, but to acquire existing units and keep them affordable for the long term.

This is what community-led solutions look like. Placer County, are you in?

Joann Hilton reminded the Placer County Board of Supervisors this week that some affordable housing solutions don't have to cost a dime. Reduced parking requirements and housing overlay zone programs are tools already within reach.

But for Joann, this issue is personal. She spoke from the heart about single parents in our community who simply need a safe, affordable place to call home.

Placer County has the tools. Now it needs the will. Thank you, Joann, for making that case.

Beth Gonzalez with Placer People of Faith Together brought a powerful message to the Placer County Board of Supervisors this week: our community needs a dedicated revenue stream for affordable housing, and the stakes couldn't be higher.

A lack of affordable housing is the leading cause of homelessness. And it's happening here, to our neighbors.

Thank you, Beth, for speaking up. Placer County is worth investing in for everyone who calls it home.
