The information below comes from an October 6 email from DeKalb Commissioner for District 2, Michelle Long Spears.

"The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners will be meeting at Brookhaven City Hall tomorrow evening, October 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The address of Brookhaven City Hall is 4001 Peachtree Road, Brookhaven, GA 30319.

There are several items of interest on the agenda for this meeting. The Committee of the Whole determines what will be on the next Board of Commissioners Business meeting, which is scheduled for October 14 at 9:00 a.m.

There will be two presentations scheduled for tomorrow’s meeting. The first is a presentation of the work of many advocates for the arts supporting the formation of an arts council for DeKalb County. The second is a presentation of the work of the DeKalb Behavioral Health Coalition addressing homelessness in DeKalb County."

"On Wednesday (9/17) at 7pm in the Food Court of Northlake Mall there will be a community meeting sponsored by firm Smith Gambrell Russell about their proposed special land use permit for multifamily residences. Northlake Mall is their client, and there is a plan to build about 500 units on about 10 acres of Northlake Mall.

Once this meeting has been held on September 17th, the formality of “holding a Public Participation (neighborhood) meeting with the community” has been met, and they can ACTUALLY apply for the Special Use Land Permit. Having our voices heard prior to the application of the Special Use Land Permit is crucial! and interesting enough, only “property owners within 500’ of the project” were given notice of this community meeting.

Community, PLEASE come out to discuss the proposal and give your feedback!"

Early voting has begun for a special primary to choose candidates for Public Service Commission seats in Districts 2 and 3. The Georgia Public Service Commission is the body elected statewide that regulates utilities such as gas and electricity. All Georgia voters are eligible to vote in these elections. The election will take place on June 17. To review your sample ballot for these primaries, go to https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/. If you vote in this primary election, you will have to choose either a Democrat or Republican ballot.

DeKalb County is having their spring Household Hazardous Waste Event on Saturday, March 15, from 8:00-noon. It pays to get there early, because they'll shut it down if their disposal bins fill up. A flyer with more info is here:

Please be aware that there will be an Emergency Response drill going on at Lakeside High on Wednesday, February 19, from 8:00-4:00. School will not be in session, and no one will be permitted on the grounds. Many emergency vehicles are likely to be on or around the campus during the drill. Do not be alarmed when you see emergency vehicles coming and going from the area. You might want to shift your commute if it takes you past the school during these hours. Be safe!

DeKalb CEO-elect Lorraine Cochran Johnson has just announced a series of Community Listening Sessions to gather constituent input on services, communication, government efficiency, economic development, and long-range community plans. You can attend these sessions in person or via Microsoft Teams. The session for District 2 (those of you whose precinct votes at Lakeside High) is October 24. The session for District 4 (those of you whose precinct votes at Briarlake Elementary) is October 29.
