Many of us loved Dolly Parton, not just for her music, but for the ways she gave back to and lifted up her community. Her Imagination Library put books directly into the hands of young children in our community and her help to families just across the border in Tennessee after the devastating wildfires some years ago were inspiring. We will miss you, Dolly, and we will always love you!

School is back in session across Buncombe County, which means our roads, sidewalks and bus stops are getting a little busier.

As students settle into a new school year, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to help keep our kids safe:

• Slow down and stay alert in school zones.
• Never pass a school bus when its stop arm is extended and lights are flashing.
• Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
• Watch carefully for students walking or biking, especially near schools, neighborhoods and bus stops.
• Parents and caregivers: remind children to use sidewalks and crosswalks when available and to look both ways before crossing the street.
• Give yourself a few extra minutes during morning and afternoon commutes. A little patience can make a big difference.

Whether students are walking, biking, riding the bus or being dropped off, getting them to school and home safely is a responsibility we all share.

From all of us at the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, we wish our students, families, teachers and school staff a safe and successful school year.

As part of the City's ongoing sidewalk improvements, the portion of New Haw Creek Road along the entire sidewalk project area will be milled and resurfaced beginning Friday, August 14.

Resurfacing work will take place on weekdays during daytime work hours, from 7 am to 6 pm and is expected to be completed by Wednesday, August 19, weather permitting. Lane closures are expected during work hours.

Originally, asphalt paving was scheduled as the final construction task. However, because of delays in the concrete work, the City decided to move the asphalt work forward and complete it before school resumes. This will help minimize disruptions to school traffic and allow the contractor to use the longer summer work hours more efficiently.

What’s Next
Work will continue on the remaining sidewalk installation. The contractor will also install pedestrian guardrails along portions of the sidewalk where there is an unsafe drop-off. The City’s code includes specific requirements for slopes and elevation changes adjacent to walking surfaces, and the guardrails will be installed in accordance with those requirements.

Beginning Thursday, August 20, when the school year resumes, the contractor will return to a work schedule with no lane closures from 7–9 am and 2–6 pm. This schedule is intended to minimize impacts during peak school-traffic periods.

The project remains on track for completion by the end of the year.
