On Monday, Durham County Commissioners approved a moratorium on some data centers, but it allowed for 100,000 square foot data centers (with closed loop cooling and non-diesel back up generators) to go forward, without any additional regulations.

Commissioner Nida Allam was the sole vote against this moratorium, and she made several amendments that improved it slightly. Thank her by tagging her in the comments or sending an email [email protected]

Durham County Data Center Moratorium Hearing today!
The data center moratorium the county is considering, would allow 100,000 square foot data centers, without any new or additional regulations. That’s a huge industrial site, with generators, and IBM estimates that size of data center to use 100 megawatts of power.

100MW is 1/13 of a new Duke Energy methane gas power plant. It is not trivial, it is a real impact on our bills, water, air, and climate. These county moratoriums are the real life brakes on Duke’s runaway greed and the possible AI bubble.

If we pass a county moratorium as strong as the city’s we can take the time to pass regulations that will protect our communities from these impacts.

🎉Durham needs to show up and speak out, to make sure that we get a real pause, and not one that doesn’t really address the problem.🎉
