American Public Power Association

American Public Power Association The American Public Power Association is the voice of not-for-profit, community-owned utilities nationwide.

Public power serves 55 million people in 2,000 towns and cities nationwide and employs 96,000 people. The Association was created in 1940 as a nonprofit, non-partisan organization to advance the public policy interests of its members and their consumers, and provide member services to ensure adequate, reliable electricity at a reasonable price with the proper protection of the environment. Policy positions emphasize the importance of hometown decision making that puts customers first and ensures a stable supply of electricity while protecting the environment. Since two-thirds of public power systems do not generate their own electricity and instead buy it on the wholesale market for distribution to customers, securing competitively priced and reliable wholesale power is a priority. The Association participates in a wide range of legislative and regulatory forums. It advocates policies that:

-ensure reliable electricity service at competitive costs;
-advance diversity and equity in the electric utility industry;
-promote effective competition in the wholesale electricity marketplace;
-protect the environment and the health and safety of electricity consumers; and
-safeguard the ability of communities to provide infrastructure services that their consumers require.

From insightful discussions on energy reliability and security to meaningful networking opportunities, APPA's Legal & Regulatory Conference continued this week in Amelia Island, Florida.

More than 200 public power attorneys, regulatory professionals, and utility leaders gathered to hear from industry experts and policymakers, including a welcome for APPA President & CEO Scott Corwin, an update from the U.S. Department of Energy, and a discussion between APPA Board Chair Mike Peters and NERC President & CEO Jim Robb on reliability and security priorities.

Between sessions, attendees have connected with colleagues and sponsors, exchanged ideas, and explored the legal and regulatory issues shaping public power.

And as a bonus, Amelia Island's beautiful sunrises have provided a memorable start to each day.

APPA's Legal & Regulatory Conference is underway in Amelia Island, Florida, bringing together public power attorneys, regulatory professionals, and industry experts for three days of learning, discussion, and networking focused on the issues shaping the utility industry. The conference provides attendees with updates and insights on the legal and regulatory developments most affecting public power utilities.

Sunday's pre-conference sessions explored the current pole attachment environment, navigating energy compliance enforcement, and contracts and rate design for data centers.

APPA President and CEO Scott Corwin recently wrapped up a busy week on the road, beginning with the APPA Board Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, where attendees saw firsthand how the region continues to recover from Hurricane Helene. The trip then took him to the Santee Cooper Leadership Institute in South Carolina and concluded in Branson, Missouri, at the Missouri Public Utility Alliance Annual Meeting.
