Arlington Artists Alliance is pleased to present the Arlington Career Center student show Phases

“Phases” are defined as distinct periods or stages in a series of events, or processes of change and development. Change is part of life: we change, we learn, we grow. Phases are found in times of transformation; they can be sudden, inevitable, or momentary. A phase may be a specific instance in time, but our entire lives are spent in phases.

Sales proceeds directly support these aspiring young artists and fund the ACC Art Department through the Alliance commission donation.

Community Venue Spotlight - We are excited to kick off a new venue partnership this month with St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, thanks to three generous volunteer curators: Pauline Kusiak, who introduced the connection to the Alliance, along with Sally Slifkin and Marcia Katz.

This first exhibit brings together work by artists Beth Hudgins and Debbie Taylor, alongside pieces by Sally and Marcia. The show is installed in the church’s large community room—a bright, open space with plenty of wall space for the work to shine.

Founded in the years following World War II, St. Michael’s grew alongside the Westover community, and that neighborhood spirit is still at the heart of the congregation today. From affordable housing advocacy to environmental stewardship, the church has long been rooted in care for the people and world around it.

That same spirit is what drew St. Michael’s to the Alliance. The church has supported the arts for years, hosting exhibitions and performances and, more recently, bringing in artists from across the country through its Art and Faith ministry. Partnering with the Alliance felt like a natural next step and a way to extend that support beyond the congregation.

At its core, this partnership is about connection. It reflects the kinds of questions the St. Michael’s community already holds close: how we live with one another, how we care for each other, and how creative work can deepen those conversations. We’re grateful to be part of it and excited to see it grow.

Alliance Artist Spotlight: Eunice Chung

After many years in legal practice, Eunice embarked on a new career as a full time artist. Eunice grew up with art and has painted and drawn all of her life, but this endeavor was new. Her approach has been comprehensive and methodical but has been open to decisions that feel right and are thoughtful. Key components have been exploration, establishing goals and a business plan, identifying the audience for her art work and learning the creative techniques to needed for her artwork.

Eunice tells us “Most of my inspiration comes from everyday life: people I love, small moments, and ordinary objects. Travel is also a major source of inspiration for me.” Pieces created last year were inspired by the challenges of 2025 and hopes for 2026. Some of those pieces are highlighted in this Spotlight. They were designed on her iPad Pro which is her favorite and primary tool, and then printed on museum quality paper or canvas, whichever is best suited to the piece. With her iPad, Eunice uses digital tools creating texture, color and shape.

Her advice for new artists, “If creating art makes you happy, make time for it. Don’t let external fears – guilt, judgment, or the pressure to be perfect – stop you from starting.” Wise words indeed!

Eunice’s new work has retained former connections but gained many new ones. These new special connections have become rewards.

The Alliance has a wonderful new community partner, Westville Clarendon, a New York City-based restaurant group known for its signature market vegetables, classic comfort food, and neighborhood vibe.

Located across the courtyard from the Alliance Gallery in the Crossing Clarendon, Westville is featuring artwork by four to five different Arlington Artists Alliance members each quarter.

Jay Strauss, Westville’s founder, shared “As in our New York City locations, we love to hang art. Our preference is to work with local artists. At our roots, we are a neighborhood restaurant and embrace any opportunity to support local organizations, educational facilities, theater and arts groups and athletic clubs.”

The first exhibit kicks off on May 29. Participating artists include Miguel Espinoza, Anya Getter, Bryan Jernigan, and Julie Wallace.

To celebrate our new partnership, Westville is hosting an opening reception on May 29 from 4 to 6 pm. Hope you can join us!
