Brothers Like Me Building healthier relationships, better choices, and better men

Empowering youth and men through mentorship, emotional intelligence, anger management, conflict resolution, domestic violence intervention, and leadership and development.

One thing I’ve learned from working with young men is that accountability isn’t always easy, especially when you’re being challenged to look at your own behavior.

But growth requires us to ask ourselves some uncomfortable questions.

Am I taking responsibility for my decisions?

Am I allowing my emotions to control my actions?

Am I blaming other people for choices I made?

At Brothers Like Me, we believe that your past decisions don’t have to determine your future.

But moving forward starts with taking ownership of where you are today.

Accountability isn’t about beating yourself up over your mistakes. It’s about recognizing them and making better decisions moving forward.

You don’t have to match someone’s energy to protect your dignity.

One of the important lessons we explored during our anger management session with H.O.M.E. Reentry Services was the difference between reacting emotionally and maintaining control of your response.

When someone disrespects you, it’s easy to believe you must respond with the same energy.

But consider this:

If someone else’s behavior determines how you behave, who’s really in control?

True emotional regulation means recognizing that you have choices, even when someone else’s actions upset you.

You can establish boundaries, address disrespect, and stand up for yourself without surrendering control of your emotions.

Building Stronger Men. Building Stronger Communities.

Brothers Like Me is excited to partner with H.O.M.E. Reentry Services to provide anger management and emotional intelligence education for men working toward positive change.

Through this collaboration, our goal is to help participants strengthen their self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, conflict resolution, and accountability.

We believe meaningful change happens when individuals are given practical tools, support, and opportunities to apply what they’ve learned.

We’re looking forward to working alongside H.O.M.E. Reentry Services and supporting the men participating in this initiative.

Growth. Accountability. Opportunity.

Not every disagreement has to turn into an argument.

Two people can see the same situation differently without either person being disrespectful.

One of the most important skills we can teach young men is how to disagree without becoming defensive, insulting someone, or allowing emotions to control the conversation.

You can stand firm in what you believe while still respecting another person’s perspective.

Do you think people today struggle more with communicating their opinions or accepting that someone else has a different one?

Being able to apologize doesn’t automatically mean you’ve taken accountability.

An apology acknowledges what happened.

Accountability requires understanding the impact of your actions and making an effort to change the behavior.

That’s an important distinction when teaching young men about emotional intelligence, responsibility, and healthy relationships.

Can an apology be sincere if the behavior keeps repeating?

Man up! doesn’t teach a young man what to do with an emotion.

If he’s angry, embarrassed, rejected, afraid or hurt, simply telling him to toughen up doesn’t give him a skill.

We can teach young men to be strong and teach them how to identify what they’re feeling, communicate it appropriately and regulate their response.

Those things aren’t opposites.

They’re part of becoming a well-rounded man.

Not every quiet young man is okay.

Sometimes the young man who “never causes problems” is carrying things nobody has bothered to ask him about.

Mentorship isn’t only about correcting bad behavior.

Sometimes it’s simply creating a space where a young man knows he can talk without being judged.

Who was the adult you could talk to when you were growing up?

Accountability isn’t punishment.

One of the most important things we can teach young men is how to say:

“I was wrong.”
“I made that choice.”
“I understand how it affected someone else.”
“Here’s what I’m going to do differently.”

Accountability isn’t about tearing someone down.

It’s teaching them how to take ownership and move forward.

What’s harder for most people: admitting they were wrong or changing the behavior afterward?

Young men need examples, not just instructions.

We can tell a young man to control his anger, communicate better, take responsibility and treat people with respect.

But eventually he’s going to look at the men around him to see what those things actually look like.

That’s why mentorship matters.

We can’t demand from the next generation what we’re unwilling to demonstrate ourselves.

What is one lesson you believe every young man should learn before adulthood?

Sometimes anger is the emotion you see, not the emotion underneath.

A young man might look angry when underneath that anger is embarrassment, rejection, fear, disappointment, or feeling unheard.

If we only correct the behavior without helping him understand what’s happening internally, we may stop the moment without teaching the skill.

Accountability matters. So does understanding.

What do you think young men need more of today correction, connection, or both?
