Today our Executive Director Ashley DeAzevedo stood with Danitza James of Repatriate Our Patriots at the U.S. Capitol, alongside military families, veterans, and members of Congress, to call on the administration to honor military parole in place. Our message to the administration was simple: keep your end of the bargain and keep our families together.

Pastor Molis Augustave and his wife, Omara, a U.S. citizen, are raising two young children in Pennsylvania. Right now ICE is holding him in Louisiana, more than 1,000 miles from home, and he could be deported to Haiti as soon as Thursday after his green card application was denied. American Families United exists for families like his: U.S. citizens whose spouses and children face separation under our immigration system. As we told Newsweek, "This is not an isolated case. At American Families United, we see bureaucratic hurdles like this used to make life harder for family members of U.S. citizens every day. This is another example of an immigration system that punishes the very people who strengthen our communities, and that treats American citizen spouses and children as collateral damage in decisions that should never have gone this way." Axios reported this week on a new bipartisan poll of Latino voters in seven battleground states, conducted by BSP Research and Shaw and Company among 1,353 registered voters between September 4 and 16.

Republican support on the congressional ballot has fallen to 29 percent against 56 for Democrats. That is below the 34 percent of these same voters who recall backing Trump in 2024, and 12 percent of those Trump voters now say they would vote for a Democrat.

Further down the questionnaire, voters were asked to choose between two candidates. 76 percent picked the one calling for a bipartisan path to permanent legal status and immigration reform, against 24 percent for the deportation-focused position. In all seven states, more than 70 percent backed pairing stronger border security with work permits for long-term immigrants who are working and can pass a background check. The lowest reading was Pennsylvania at 71 percent and the highest Arizona at 83.

Voters were not asked to choose between security and legal status. Across seven states they backed both.

As our executive director Ashley DeAzevedo told Axios: "Outside the DC bubble, voters aren't one-dimensional: they can want real national security and treating people humanely at the same time."

Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar has stood firm as an ally on legislation that would actually help our communities, even when it cost her standing inside her own party.
That takes courage. And too often, the response from our side is to pile on instead of showing up.
If we want other Republicans to follow her lead, we cannot show them that we’ll eat them alive the moment they agree with us. Nobody crosses over to get attacked for it.
Rep. Salazar has earned our support. Let’s give it to her.
