Our friends at the North Carolina Department of Transportation have begun a project to widen 1.5 miles of Covered Bridge Road in Archer Lodge.
The $12.3 million project will widen the road to three lanes, including a turn lane, from west of Helena Lane to east of Buffalo Road. The DOT expects construction to wrap up in the summer of 2028.
Contract crews will begin by relocating primarily water lines along the left side of Covered Bridge Road as drivers travel eastbound. This early utility work is the first step in preparing the 1.5-mile section for widening.
For most of the project, Covered Bridge Road will remain open to two-way traffic. However, drivers should expect daily lane closures and brief traffic stoppages as crews work in and near the roadway.
Overnight and weekend lane closures are possible, and weekday closures may occur outside of the morning and afternoon commutes.
If you're traveling through the work zone:
• Slow down.
• Obey posted work-zone signs.
• Watch for construction crews and equipment.
• Allow extra time for possible delays.
Access to homes and businesses along Covered Bridge Road will remain open during construction.
