We’ve all been there…sometimes we have to do things that either because of the task or because of how we feel on the given day, we cannot seem to get ourselves to do. Pushing through is almost always a possibility and one way to get moving is to reframe how we are thinking about the task.

Adolescence is one of the most self-critical periods of life. Intense emotions, social comparison, academic pressure, and questions of identity, often with little framework for how to treat yourself kindly when things go wrong.

Research backs up what many of us sense intuitively: a meta-analysis of over 7,000 young people found a strong link between self-compassion and reduced psychological distress in teens. Young people who develop it show greater resilience, higher well-being, and recover more gracefully from failure.

What makes self-compassion so valuable is that it stays available even when things fall apart, unlike self-esteem, which rises and falls with performance and approval. It gives teens a stable inner foundation, one that doesn't depend on getting it right every time.

Flexibility is the ability to adjust thoughts, emotions, and actions when the unexpected happens. It is the mental and emotional shift that moves a young person from “This isn’t what I wanted” toward “What can I do now?”
4 Practical strategies to help youth build flexibility are:
Help them develop a vocabulary for how they feel. Labeling an emotion moves the brain from a reactive state into a creative state: from self preservation to active creation.
Validate how they feel then redirect their attention by taking a deep breath then making a new plan.
Practice during calm times. Turn considering a “Plan B” into a natural first response by practicing when there are no stakes; for instance when planning on going for a walk bring up the possibility that it might rain, work together to come up with a Plan B.
Narrate your own flexibility when things change in your life. This provides a powerful real-life template for handling emotions.
And, of course, celebrate successes when your child exhibits flexibility.
