Troop 15 Arcata CA

Troop 15 Arcata CA Troop 15 is Arcata's Scouts BSA Troop. We usually consist of about 15 active Scouts. During this meeting we play a game for about 30 minutes.

Every Monday we have a hour and a half long meeting, traditionally from 7:00 to 8:30, but we have been doing 5:30-7:00 ever since COVID began, to get more sunlight and hold more outside activities. Afterward we normally work on a Merit Badge that us scouts have voted on. The good thing about our Troop is that since we are fairly small, you have more say in what you want to do or what Merit Badges

we wish to work on. One thing that makes us different from other Troops is that we have our own building at Redwood Park. Most Troops do not get their own building. Our Scout Hut consists of one main big room, six small rooms, and a bathroom. It is an old building with lots of history. We go on an outing about once a month. We do some community service, however most of our outings are fun. We have gone camping many times. We have also gone snow skiing and water skiing, (not on the same trip). We have gone on trips to the USS Hornet, the Troop 15 goof off hike, Camporee , Spookeree, Hornaday, and lots of local camping and backpacking trips. During COVID restrictions, we are following County guidelines and meeting outdoors as weather permits, and via Zoom in the harsher weather. We're still able to go camping and hiking, we're just being more careful about it.

Troop 15 held our first backpacking trip of the year this past weekend on the Flint Ridge Trail. This trail traverses 4.5 miles of old growth redwood forest in Redwood National Park, just south of the Klamath River estuary. The weather was perfect and good fun was had by all. Looking forward to the next outing now that it's starting to feel like spring.

Troop 15 and Cub Scout Pack 95 participated in a conservation service project yesterday with California State Parks to remove invasive English ivy along the trail between Trinidad State Beach and the Elks Head Trailhead. The State Parks crew remarked that is was the most productive ivy pull they had ever seen! Afterwards, the Troop members all enjoyed a pizza feast to celebrate a job well done.

Next up on the Troop’s schedule is assisting with Pack 95s annual crossing over ceremony for Arrow of Light Scouts transitioning from the Pack to the Troop. This will be followed by a multi-night “advancement camp” at Camp Riggs, where younger Scouts will work on honing their camping, cooking, fire building, first aid, and knot tying skills, while older Troop members will work on completing their Signs, Signals, and Codes Merit Badge. Scout On!

A big thank you to Thomas Home Center-True Value of McKinleyville for providing us with paint and supplies to completely repaint the interior of the Scout Hut. It has been quite a while since we've been able to get the place repainted and there were lots of signs of wear and tear on the place, between the Scouts, Redwood Day Camp, and the bit of vandalism we had in the past. The place is certainly brighter and smells fresher. We'll get the decorations and awards back up after we clean and organize them.

Troop 15 held a conservation service project this past weekend in conjunction with the Jacoby Creek Land Trust and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Coastal Program at the Kokte Ranch & Nature Preserve in Bayside CA. The project was held to remove invasive Himalayan blackberry and help clear competing vegetation around native trees growing along lower Jacoby Creek. This work was done where a Troop 15 member will be undertaking their Eagle Scout project in the coming weeks to build and install a series of benches at the site to create a relaxing and educational space along the Land Trust's creek side nature path. And as always, we wrapped up the workday with a great BBQ lunch for everyone that helped out.

Troop 15 just wrapped up our 9-day 50+ mile Philmont trek. Amazing and challenging with Scout spirit and camaraderie abounding, including the summiting of Mt Baldy (12,441’), a trail building service project, and even spar pole climbing, a COPE course, blacksmithing, and a horseback ride thrown in along the way.
