At Heartland Haven, reading is more than sitting at a desk—it's an adventure.

Through Reading with Rio – Horse Powered Reading®, students partner with a horse to build confidence, motivation, and the skills they need to become successful readers in a fun, movement-based outdoor environment.

Our certified Horse Powered Reading® facilitators use horses, games, props, and experiential learning activities to help children:

✅ Build phonics and word recognition skills
✅ Improve reading comprehension
✅ Strengthen vocabulary and fluency
✅ Develop confidence and motivation
✅ Enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills
✅ Experience learning in a unique, hands-on way

🐴 No riding required
🌿 Outdoor learning environment
📚 Individual & small group sessions
🎓 Scholarships available

Summer enrollment is now open!
Sessions available on Tuesdays.

At Heartland Haven Foundation, we are deeply grateful for the courage, service, and selflessness of those who gave their lives in defense of our freedom. Their legacy lives on through the lives they protected and the hope they inspired.

There’s something powerful that happens when horses and humans come together. 💙🐴

Heartland Haven Foundation partners with Lotus Behavioral Health Center for equine-partnered group sessions with at-risk teens—creating space for connection, trust, emotional growth, and healing.

Through groundwork activities, horse care, grooming, observation, and relationship-based interactions, these teens experienced firsthand how horses can help teach:

✨ Emotional regulation
✨ Communication & trust
✨ Confidence & leadership
✨ Patience & self-awareness
✨ Healthy connection without judgment

Our horses have a unique way of helping walls come down and authentic moments rise to the surface. From quiet interactions in the barn to powerful moments in the round pen, this session reminded us that healing doesn’t always happen in an office—it can happen beside a horse.

We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Lotus Behavioral Health Center for sharing our passion for supporting youth through innovative, experiential approaches to wellness and personal growth.

Together, we are creating opportunities for hope, healing, and transformation—one connection at a time. 💙
