James J Davis(1873-1947) was the City Clerk for Elwood, IN(1898-1902) then he was elected as the Madison County Recorder(1903-1907) before being appointed as the US Secretary of Labor(1921-1930) and US Senator from Pennsylvania(1930-1945). He joined the Crawfordsville Moose Lodge #6 at 33 years old as the 247th member and helped start the Elwood and Anderson Moose Lodges.
He had a vision to change the values behind what The Loyal Order of the Moose stood for and took the organization from a dying men’s social club to a thriving charitable organization that started helping its members and the children of deceased members. When he was appointed as The Moose’s first Director General he appointed Anderson Moose Lodge #1 as the National Headquarters until Mooseheart was opened in North Aurora, IL in 1913.
