You don't need acres of prairie to help pollinators.
A small garden filled with native plants can provide nectar, pollen, shelter, and habitat for bees, butterflies, moths, and other insects.
Consider replacing part of your lawn with native plants, adding a few flowering species to an existing garden, or planting a native container garden.
Every patch of habitat counts and your garden can be part of a larger network of pollinator-friendly spaces across Iowa.

The next time it rains, take a look at what happens to the water.
Does it soak into a garden or planting?
Does it run across your lawn?
Does it flow toward a storm drain?
Landscapes with deep-rooted native plants can help slow down and absorb rainfall. This can reduce runoff and help keep soil and pollutants from washing into our streams and rivers.

Pollinators Need More Than Flowers 🐝🌼
When we think about pollinator habitat, we often picture colorful flowers covered in bees and butterflies.
But pollinators need more than just nectar. They also need places to nest, shelter from weather, and find food throughout the growing season. Native plants can provide many of these resources while also helping improve soil health and water quality.
A diverse native planting can support an entire community of insects and benefit the landscape around it, too.

Healthy Soil = Healthy Water 🌱💧
What happens on the land around us affects the water flowing through Iowa.
Native plants have deep, extensive root systems that help hold soil in place, reduce erosion, and allow rainwater to soak into the ground instead of rushing into streams and carrying sediment and pollutants with it.
Planting native flowers, grasses, and trees isn't just good for pollinators; it can also be part of protecting Iowa's waterways.
Small changes in our landscapes can make a big difference downstream.

🐚 Meet the living breathing water filters we just relocated from below Hannum's Mill Dam on the South Skunk River.
