🚨ASK A FIREFIGHTER!🚒

Q: I dropped my phone the other day and it automatically tried to make an emergency call. What would happen if I hadn’t turned it off?

A: 🧑‍🚒That’s a pretty new and evolving circumstance for us! Many phones are now capable of automatically calling 911 for you in an emergency, even if you become unconscious. Usually these notifications can be turned on or off in your phone settings, but just like you’re getting used to these new features on your phone, we’re getting used to how to handle these types of circumstances. It’s evolving but is a cool piece of technology that has helped save lives even here in Boone County!

When our dispatch center first started getting these calls, we began immediately treating them as a report of a vehicle crash (we call them Automated Crash Notifications or ACNs). Over time, things have changed a bit and are still evolving as we learn how we feel it is best to handle them. We won’t pretend to know the inner workings of our dispatch center (they’re pros and most of what they do is WAY over our heads!) but typically effort is made to contact the owner of the phone but pretty quickly if contact can’t be made, someone goes looking.

Oftentimes, these turn out to be a phone that was left sitting on the outside of a car or took a hard fall somewhere that the owner couldn’t safely reach while driving, but several of these have turned out to be actual vehicle crashes and some of them have been pretty major. When our firefighters are dispatched to these, we treat them as if they’re the real thing until we know otherwise. Our firefighters are gearing up and getting ready to cut someone free from a crunched up vehicle every time we get dispatched to a vehicle crash and ACNs are no different. We’d rather be prepared and not needed, than needed and not prepared. Usually if it is an actual crash our dispatch center starts receiving 911 calls within a few minutes of the ACN but it has happened that a vehicle crashed in the county in the middle of the night and the only notification we received was the driver’s cell phone automatically calling.

Our firefighters are always here to help, even if sometimes it’s just reuniting a smashed up phone with its disappointed owner!

Excellent question! Stay safe, Boone!

🧑‍🚒STAFFING UPDATE🧑‍🚒

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted an update, but our members have continued working to improve the staffing for the Boone Fire Department to ensure adequate protection when you call 911 and protecting the safety of our firefighters.

At last night’s Boone City Council meeting, we took another step forward as a community when the Council voted UNANIMOUSLY to apply for a Federal SAFER grant, voting to apply for a grant that would help fund an additional 3 full-time firefighters for 3 years. This Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant is perfect for communities like us who are growing, but are struggling to keep pace with staffing to meet the needs of the community. We’d like to thank our City leaders including our Fire Chief, City Administrator, Mayor and City Council members for the work they’ve done researching this opportunity, its long-term viability and voting to apply for the grant.

Years ago, we increased staffing from 3 to 4 by adding an EMS-only position, filled only when someone with those qualifications was hired and available to work. Later, that was increased to allowing personnel with Firefighter and EMT certifications to fill that roll and increasing 4th FF staffing to 30% of the time. This proof-of-concept showed that we could greatly reduce our reliance on off-duty firefighters to staff day-to-day operations by increasing daily staffing to 4. With the help of the community and City Council, last fall that number was increased to 60% of the time then again this spring during goal/budget setting when Council directed the Fire Chief to set the Fire Department budget to staff 4 daily, utilizing part-time firefighter/EMTs.

This SAFER grant is no guarantee, but applying for it is the first step toward solidifying our daily staffing to ensure that when you call 911, a firetruck will be showing up to help and it will have on it the firefighters needed to do the job!

In case you missed it yesterday, a concerned citizen reached out yesterday looking for some help for a few ducks who found their way into the storm sewer. We're here to help those in need, even the fluffy or furry kind!

Last year members of Iowa Professional Fire Fighters from across the state secured one of the strongest presumptive cancer laws in the United States with the enactment of House File 969. The new law broadens the states disability program to cover all fire fighter cancers, up from the previous limited list of 14. This is HUGE for fire fighters and their families affected by an ever increasing threat of cancer.

One thing fire fighters across the United States have been asking is, how can we work on limiting our exposure to cancer causing toxins. Fire fighters here at Boone Fire have looked in the mirror and tried to answer this question. One key area we identified was not out on a fire scene, but in the fire house itself. The fire trucks we rely on every day for life safety were pumping toxic exhaust fumes into our living quarters and throughout the fire house. Members of Local 678 have been working with Fire Chief Adams for several years to install a system to eliminate toxic exhaust gases. After all this work we have finally had Plymovent exhaust systems installed. This system hooks directly to the vehicle exhaust system sucking the toxic exhaust out of the station. This will ensure that members of Boone Fire can breathe easier while in the fire house.

While all exposure to deadly carcinogens will not be eliminated we will continue to work to limit our exposures and strive for better practices.
