Today, we celebrate Juneteenth: a powerful reminder of freedom delayed, but not denied.
On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they were free. Juneteenth stands as a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the unbreakable spirit of a people who fought for liberty, dignity, and justice.
As we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, we must also recognize that the pursuit of justice did not end in 1865. While tremendous progress has been made, many communities continue to call for fairness, accountability, and equal treatment under the law. Concerns surrounding police brutality, disparities within the judicial system, and unequal access to opportunities remind us that the work of building a more just society continues.
Juneteenth is not only a celebration of freedom gained. It is also a call to protect freedom, defend human dignity, and ensure that justice is truly accessible to all. It challenges us to learn from history, engage in meaningful conversations, and work together to create a future where every person is valued and treated with respect.
Today, we honor the past, celebrate the progress, and remain committed to the ongoing pursuit of equity, justice, and unity.
