The Madison County Sheriff’s Merit Commission announces
a career opportunity in Law Enforcement.
EXAMINATION FOR PROBATIONARY DEPUTY SHERIFF ($28.18 per hour) and PROBATIONARY JAIL OFFICER ($26.69 per hour).

Applications will be accepted from May 19, 2022 to June 17, 2022.
Benefits include health insurance, thirteen paid holidays, paid vacation, retirement plan, and furnished uniforms.
Examination date will be June 25, 2022, at Southwestern Illinois College-Belleville (SWIC).
All Probationary Deputy Applicants must meet the following requirements at the time the application is filed:
U.S. Citizen
Madison County resident within six months of hire
Minimum of 21 years of age
Valid Drivers License
Clean police record
High school diploma or GED with any one of the following criteria (A,B,C):
A- Two (2) year Associate Degree or the equivalent in college credits (60 semester credit hrs. or 90 quarterly hrs).
MUST INCLUDE COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS/DIPLOMA WITH APPLICATION.
B- Prior law enforcement experience-One year, full-time, post law enforcement academy experience with a recognized local, state, or federal law enforcement agency.
C-Prior Military -Two years experience continuous active duty experience with the United States Armed Forces and have, or are eligible to receive, honorable discharge. (Candidates tested before discharge will be required to present an “honorable discharge” before hire.). MUST INCLUDE COPY OF DD214 WITH APPLICATION.
Applicants will be required to pass a POWER (Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report) test. The power test will be offered on June 25, 2022, prior to written exam. The physical power test is based on the minimum standards required for admission to the basic police course as set by the Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Officers Training Board.
All Probationary Jail Officer Applicants must meet the following requirements at the time the application is filed:
U.S. Citizen
Madison County resident within six months of hire
Minimum of 21 years of age
Valid Drivers License
Clean police record
High school diploma or GED.
Applicants will be required to receive a passing score on a written exam.
Applicants are advised that these positions require very good motor skills, visual acuity, good hearing, and the ability to perform under stressful conditions. These are considered basic entry level officer positions.
Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph test, and medical exam.
Prior drug use may eliminate applicant.
Applicants who successfully complete the application process will be placed on an eligibility list of qualified persons furnished to the Sheriff. This list will serve as the sole source for persons hired for the above position.
VETERANS WHO WISH TO CLAIM PREFERENCE POINTS MUST ATTACH A COPY OF THEIR DD FORM 214, OR OTHER PROOF OF HONORABLE DISCHARGE, TO THEIR APPLICATION.
