Sylvia's Place

Sylvia's Place Our mission is to create and sustain a safe environment that empowers survivors of domestic violence. Non-resident referrals and services are also available.

We provide a warm and safe place for those fleeing domestic violence. We also provide case management, emergency clothing and supplies, personal hygiene products, food and laundry facilities as needed. Advocacy services are available to help victims access resources and act as a liaison with law enforcement and the court system. Upon arrival at our safe house, an assessment of mental, physical and

financial needs is conducted. An individualized action plan is developed based on the client's personal needs. All services are provided free of charge to victims of domestic violence.

Today, we celebrate the nonprofits that strengthen our communities, change lives, and show up every day for the people who need us most.

But we also recognize the very real challenges ahead. Nonprofits are facing significant funding reductions, bringing tighter budgets, difficult decisions, and unfortunate changesโ€”all while we work to protect the services our communities depend on.

At Sylviaโ€™s Place, we understand the struggle. We understand the pressure of making every dollar count while continuing to provide the highest quality support possible. And we know we are not alone.

For domestic violence services in Michigan, a $25 million funding reduction threatens critical resources for survivors seeking safety, support, and a path forward.

This is where our community matters.

If nonprofits matter to you, now is the time to show it. ๐Ÿ’œ

Donate when you can.
Volunteer your time.
Attend and support fundraising events.
Share our missions and stories.
Advocate for sustainable funding.
Ask what your local nonprofits needโ€”and help where you can.

Not everyone can give financially, but everyone can do something.

To our nonprofit partners: we see you, we stand with you, and we honor the work you continue to do despite the challenges.

And to our community: please don't wait until services disappear to realize how much they matter.

Support the organizations doing the work nowโ€”because the people who rely on them cannot afford to wait.

๐Ÿ’œ This National Nonprofit Day, celebrate us by standing beside us. We need you.

๐Ÿ’œ Survivor Spotlight

After he belittled her in front of an entire movie theater, she quietly walked to the restroom. She could feel the tears building, but she refused to let them fall.

A woman who had witnessed what happened followed her in.

She gently asked, "Are you safe?"

For just a moment, she imagined saying, "No."

She imagined allowing herself to have the breakdown she had been holding in for so long. She imagined taking the stranger's hand and walking away from the life that was slowly breaking her.

Instead, she smiled through the pain.

"He's just having a bad day at work."
"He's upset with everything that's going on."
"It's not usually like this."

She returned to her seat beside him.

Today, she says she knew, even then, "I should have left with the stranger."

Abuse often convinces survivors to minimize what they're experiencing, make excuses for the person hurting them, and believe things will get better if they just try harder. Leaving isn't simply a decisionโ€”it's a process filled with fear, uncertainty, and hope.

If you recognize yourself in this story, know this: You deserve kindness. You deserve respect. And when someone asks if you're safe, you deserve the chance to answer honestly.

๐Ÿ’œ Sylvia's Place is here whenever you're ready. You don't have to face it alone.

We are incredibly grateful to Advia Credit Union for investing in our mission through an Advancing Lives Grant! ๐Ÿ’œ

This generous support helps us continue providing critical services, advocacy, and hope to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence in our community. Grants like this make a lasting difference, allowing us to meet survivors where they are and provide the resources they need to move toward safety, healing, and independence.

Thank you, Advia Credit Union, for believing in our mission and for your commitment to advancing lives throughout our community. Together, we are creating a future where every individual has the opportunity to live free from violence.

โœจ Survivor Spotlight

"I never thought I'd make it through those darkest days. There were nights I cried myself to sleep, wondering if life would ever feel safe again. But little by little, I found my voice. I learned that surviving wasn't just about making it through the dayโ€”it was about believing I deserved peace, hope, and a future free from fear. Today, I'm still healing, but I'm no longer defined by what happened to me. I'm defined by the strength it took to keep going." ๐Ÿ’œ

She survived, she got out, she escaped with nothing but her own doubts...but she turned her fear into strength and won. You can too!

If you're in the middle of your own battle, know this: healing isn't linear, and you don't have to have it all figured out today. Every step forward, no matter how small, is proof of your courage.

You are stronger than your past. You are worthy of safety. And you are never alone.
