At some point this week, September 28-October 2, repaving and street maintenance will occur on Somervelle Street from Duke Street to the end where the farmer’s market is located.. Repaving, patching, and sidewalk programs are to maintain the infrastructure in good condition for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers to safely travel throughout the City.

The Edsall Road Data Center Electrical Substation (Substation) Public Hearing, originally scheduled for September 24, 2026, has been rescheduled to December 2, 2026, at the request of Dominion Energy.
The proposed site for the Substation on 6295 Edsall Road is just outside Alexandria city limits and approximately one mile from Tucker Elementary School at Cameron Station.

An update about the renovation of the Alexandria City Hall.

Since the project's pre-construction kickoff community meeting earlier this year, Grunley Construction Company mobilized on site in late February. With abatement and hazardous material removal now complete, the site is ready for the next visible milestone: deconstruction of the 1960s infill portion of City Hall, beginning in September.‎

This phase will include:
• A high reach demolition excavator on the Plaza as it deconstructs the building one chunk at a time,
• Increased truck traffic for debris removal along the approved haul route
• Additional noise during permitted construction hours, in accordance with the City's noise ordinance, and
• Continued fencing and pedestrian detours around the 301 King Street site.

On August 18, Fairfax-based Van Metre Companies announced the acquisition of a 110 townhome development site at Alexandria’s WestEnd. The former home to Landmark Mall will feature three-level townhomes with front and rear terraces with private parking garages. Construction hasn’t started yet on the project, and the company said it will start reserving homes for contract next spring.
Kevin Campbell of Van Metre Companies stated “WestEnd is being built into one of the most significant mixed-use redevelopments in the Washington region, anchored by a new hospital campus and hundreds of new residential units already underway.”
When completed, the 52-acre WestEnd site will be home to more than 2,500 new residential units, the new Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark, 300,000 square feet of retail, four acres of parks, open space, and a transit hub. The city is also considering relocating one of its fire stations to the area.
Developers broke ground on the first 390-unit residential building at WestEnd in June and expect to complete it in 2028. Inova Health System is also targeting completion of the four-building hospital campus by 2028.

Duke Street Land Use Plan DRAFT Recommendations Extends Public Comment Period through September 15.

On July 20, the Department of Planning and Zoning (P&Z) released the Working Draft Recommendations and their associated Figures and Maps for the Duke Street Land Use Plan. The recommendations contain a lot of information. In order to provide community members enough time to ask questions and submit feedback, the public comment period has been extended through September 15.
Here are some ways to provide feedback.

CaringU is Alexandria’s free learning institute designed to foster positive community connections and youth development.
