YOUTH ON THE PITCH, !

Across Western Area Rural, Port Loko, Kambia, Moyamba, Bonthe and Bo, GADNet brought young people together through football to send a message that goes far beyond the game.

As one of the activities under the and part of the 7th National Girls Summit 2026 Pre-Summit activities the created spaces for young people to connect, speak up and take collective action to prevent violence against girls and young women.

Football brings people together. It builds teamwork, confidence and leadership while creating a shared platforgirls and young people to raise their voices and promote safer, more inclusive communities.

Across the districts, our message was clear:

has no place on the pitch, in our homes or in our communities.
and young women deserve to live, learn, lead and participate free from violence.
have a role to play in preventing violence and building safer communities.

The launch of the 7th National Girls Summit 2026 is making its way across the nation as we move .

FIVE DISTRICTS. ONE VISION. A STRONGER YOUTH VOICE.

Across Western Area Rural, Port Loko, Kambia, Moyamba and Bonthe, an important conversation is taking place about the future of youth leadership and collective action.

As part of the , Supported by Embassy of Iceland in Freetown through UN Women Sierra Leone GADNet has commenced stakeholder consultations to strengthen and connect existing youth structures and create a platform where young people can organise, lead advocacy, engage decision-makers and take collective action on issues affecting their communities.

The consultations brought together District Youth Council representatives, the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, District Local Councils and youth leaders in the different districts to look at what already exists, what needs strengthening and how young people can take greater ownership of the movement.

And across the five districts, one message stood out:

Young people want to lead. They want ownership. They want their voices to matter.

This is why the is an important part of EMERGE.

Because preventing violence against women and girls, advancing gender equality and strengthening economic resilience cannot be achieved through programmes delivered to young people alone. Young people must be organised, engaged and empowered to help drive the change.

The proposed district Youth Movements will therefore be youth-led, independently organised and inclusive, while working collaboratively with relevant institutions and stakeholders.

Across the consultations, districts proposed 7–8 member executive structures, with clearly defined roles and transparent processes for selecting representatives.

The goal is to build functional movements that can:

meaningful leadership space for girls and young women
young people with disabilities and other underrepresented voices are included
advocacy and community awareness
duty bearers and promote accountability
youth organisations, groups and networks
young people for collective action
community priorities and develop solutions
youth leadership beyond individual project activities

This means the Youth Movement becomes more than a project committee. It becomes a platform for young people to organise, influence, collaborate and act.

And importantly, this is designed with sustainability in mind.

The intention is to build structures that young people can own, strengthen and continue to use beyond EMERGE activities, creating a stronger foundation for youth leadership and collective action within their communities.

With formation processes now being planned across the five districts, the next chapter is about turning these conversations into active, inclusive and youth-led movements.

THE 7TH NATIONAL GIRLS SUMMIT 2026 IS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED!

Today, Girls Advocacy Development Network, the and officially launched the 7th Sierra Leone National Girl Summit 2026 during a powerful Press Conference and Official Launch, under the theme:

“Our Power in Action: Protecting Our Future.”

The Press Conference created an important space for girls and young people to speak for themselves to share the realities they face, raise their demands, and call for greater investment in girls and young people.

NGS is more than an annual gathering. It is a , and -centred platform where girls and young women can speak openly, shape conversations, build leadership, demand accountability and influence decisions that affect their lives and futures.

It creates space for girls to be heard, seen and taken seriously, not simply as beneficiaries, but as young people with ideas, solutions, rights and the power to lead change.

From leadership, health and protection to education, economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, mentorship and advocacy, NGS brings girls together across different backgrounds, districts, age groups and lived experiences, including girls with disabilities.

Why continued investment matters

Investing in NGS every year means investing in a generation of girls who are building confidence, developing leadership, understanding their rights, creating networks and finding their voices.

It means creating a consistent platform where girls can tell decision-makers what they need—not simply have decisions made for them.
